Inside the World's Largest Buddhist Temple
Description:
At a Thai Buddist temple called Wat Phra Dhammakaya a mass ordination of 34,000 monks takes places. Performed at an elaborate ceremony for which the temple is renowned, the men come from all over the country to become monks. Wat Phra Dhammakaya was founded by Khun Yay, a Buddhist nun, in 1970 after her masters death. Her aim was to set up a temple to see the continual growth of the Dhammakaya tradition and established the temple with vision of a sanctuary for peaceful spiritual practice a refuge in the midst of a turbulent world. The temple was to become a centre for international meditation study and now has millions of members worldwide and centres from Los Angeles to London to Sydney. In the late 1990's after a string of allegations of embezzlement of millions the temple started to perform mass ceremonies which every year increased in number up to this day where it performs ordinations of 100,000 monks and mass meditation ceremonies of half a million people.
