Slaughter-free: What it means

  • Ahimsa Milk is the only commercially produced milk that guarantees no cow, calf or bull is ever slaughtered as part of its production.
  • Ahimsa milk costs a little more than conventional milk, but is a small price to pay to ensure no cow, calf or bull suffers to bring milk to your breakfast table.
  • Ahimsa milk aspires to the highest possible standards of cow welfare and we retire our cows to a sanctuary when their productive days are over.
  • We are exploring innovative ways of working with bulls to ensure their economic viability.
  • It is possible to taste the difference between our milk and that which is conventionally produced.
  • Rather than farms becoming like factories, such as that envisaged by Nocton, with thousands of cows housed in a shed and milked to death, slaughter-free milk is a sustainable way for farmers to produce milk.
  • Ahimsa milk is the milk of the future

Ahimsa milk will be produced to the following minimal standards:

  • No cows, calves or bulls will be slaughtered
  • Cows can graze freely on open pasture
  • Cows will be protected for life

Commonwork Organic Dairy is fully responsible for all milking cows. The Lotus Trust has set up a new not-for-profit organisation – the Ahimsa Dairy Foundation (ADF) which will be responsible for on-going care of all non-milking cows, specifically calves, bulls and retired milking cows.

Cows at Commonwork are looked after to Soil Association organic standards, this means they are not injected with hormones or steroids; they are on a diet of non-GM forage (mainly plant leaves, stems, legumes and grass)  primarily grown on the farm; they graze in open fields during spring, summer and autumn. Winter housing is spacious and they have areas where they can walk around with access to food 24 hours a day. The health and welfare of the cows is foremost, they are treated with homeopathy and alternative treatments when possible, and antibiotics are used when no other approaches work.

Although hand-milking is preferable, this is not possible at Commonwork and not viable for our initiative at present. The cows are milked with care using milk machines twice a day. Initially, a herd of 10/12 cows will produce milk separately for the Ahimsa project, milk is collected in a separate tank to ensure there is no cross contamination through separate milk lines . Cows will give birth  to calves once every two years, a maximum of 5 calves in a lifetime. This will take place both naturally through the use of a bull or sometimes by artificial insemination. This is not our option of preference, but for practical reasons we may need to resort to this method at the present time.  Elder cows will be retired to a cow sanctuary after their final calf – at approximately 13 years old.

New born calves are kept with their mothers for the first four to five days. They will receive colostrum (the first milk from a cow after giving birth) rich in antibodies and mineral directly from their mother after birth. Calves are gradually weaned after three months of receiving milk. Our belief is that this could be further improved with more direct interaction between mother and calf and a longer weaning period, a standard we are working towards.

Male calves are thereafter passed onto the care of Ahimsa Dairy Foundation (ADF). Female calves will likely join the milking herd. We are exploring innovative new ways of working with bulls.

All animals are under the jurisdiction of Commonwork until they enter retirement at which point they enter into the care of the ADF. Commonwork are committed to ensuring the highest welfare standard of the Ahimsa herd. They regularly communicate and consult with us on the health and wellbeing of cows in their care.  Our herdsman will also regularly check on the wellbeing of all ahimsa cows

Organic Milk, is it enough?

21.08.11

Perhaps the Organic standards, set by the Soil Association or one of four other agencies seem poor by our “noble” standards. But the alternative lifestyles for regular dairy herds are indeed bleak in comparison.

The positive rules for the well-being of the organic herd, although unlike our herd, still slaughter-based have a profound, positive effect on the lives of the cows, bulls and calves in their care.

A herd on an organic farm spend at least half their time outdoors in the fresh air. Many non-organic cows never see a field during their entire, brief lives. Indoors an Organic herd recieve more good quality bedding and room.

Antibiotics are only used when necessary for the health of the cow, and their food is also organic, meaning no antibiotics, pesticides and chemicals to pass along to humans consuming this dairy produce. (At the point of this writing, chickens as well as humans are suffering from the same antibiotic-resistance problems. See onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j for details.)

The Organic cow’s food itself is mainly organically-produced clover-rich grass and fresh forage, with a maximum 40% concentrates and no intensive food supplements. The cows are less stressed, more comfortable and healthier.

Female calves recieve their mother’s milk for at least three months, and the Soil Association is working to improve the lot of the male calves, but sadly in a farming culture with no role for bulls at this time, this is difficult.

So no, Organic dairy produce is not slaughter-free, but until our newly established herd becomes a model for slaughter-free herds to become established where you live, supporting the Organic Dairy Farmers is still the next best thing at this time for those of us who want/need to include dairy in our diet.  (Below is one of our cows Tilly, happily chewing frsh grass on her Organic farm.)

  • since I had not drank any animal milk past my infancy , thanks to my orthodox mother, what are my chances to reach healthy lifestyle ?.................................................................................

Who wants to drink cows puss ?.aka it's blood ~~

    not me~!~

I would prefer and advocate almond milk, walnut milk, hemp milk or even organic soy milk  instead...........................

    • I drink almond milk and it is awesome, great in coffee and yummy on cereal and for cooking too.  I have never been able to tolerate cows milk but just the thought of it really creeps me out.  I use soy milk for cooking and chowders and it works really well too.  I used to get violent cramps from milk products when I was little that continues to this day.  Now they just have a fancy name for it.... lactose intolerant, lol.  Soy Delicious Purely Decadent vegan Ice cream is awesome by the way...my favorite is Rocky Road, but the Peanut Butter Cholate zig zag is heavenly too.

There are so many wonderful choices out there to chose from that I have never felt deprived.  I think my body having violent pain when drinking milk was telling me that it was not something I needed. Sometimes our bodies shout over our minds desires, lol.  There is vegan cheese called Daiya that makes a wonderful macaroni and "cheese".  It is shreaded and looks, smells, and tastes and cooks just like cheddar I have been told, and they also make parmasan type vegan cheese that is awesome too. It is make with soy and vegetable products....It is an amazing substitute.  No cows were abused for its production.

      • As you mentioned ICE CREAM the one i like and i am known to consume the whole tub in one go in Wholefoods is SWEDISH GLACE Wildberry flavour

        It is:

        LACTOSE FREE

        GLUTEN FREE

        CHOLESTEROL FREE

        GM FREE

        SUITABLE FOR VEGETARIANS

        SUITABLE FOR VEGANS

        KOSHER APPROVED

Please don't tell our friend Ben-Arion who lives in Sweden about it as he might get addicted and then there will be shortage of supplies.

TRY IT AS YOU WILL LOVE IT

        • Yummyyy, wonder if I can get this in the US, will have to check....I love trying new yummys.
          • thaqt Ice Cream I would taste................

    • Lord Krishna by his Godly powers manifested the first cow called Surabhi and then came other cows and all the cows were treated with unnconditional love so they produced excellent milk for humans to consume. Later as time went by and we came into Kali Yuga the cows were not treated well and so the milk they produced was low quality but now Ahimsa Milk is of good quality as the cows are looked after very well.

If Lord Krishna recommended cows milk for humans then it should be good enough for us ...hence Ahimsa Milk is good enough for us

      • yes indeed, we are led to believe that gods came down from heavens and introduced for us baked bread from the wheat fields and animals to bread and produce milk. Also, true it is that even such masters as Essenes advocated goats milk in their diet. Yet, some of us today prefer no animal product in their bodies, just like the original humanoids feasting on fruits from trees and herbs from the fields aka quote from Genesis ( and thats not the rock band )................

milk is controversial topic to those who advocate it not and those who still consume....................

        I say forget that puss...................

..........my old ladies opinion about milk :..............to quote her as I write this.,,,,,,,,,~

~, I don't think its healthy to drink milk of another specie, that milk is intended to nourish the young of that specie, not humans. So, humans are intended to drink their mothers milk early in their phisical development. After that there is no need to be drinking other animals puss.

Does that explain anything to wondering mind ? intelligent mind ? wise mind ?.........Am I ignorant to quote these statements to vegans or like minded individuals ?.........................

        • I see your point of view esseya and i agree with you but it is not so easy to become a vegan overnight for most so for those who consume milk on a daily bases it is better for them to have Ahimsa milk compared to milk produced by cows that are not looked after well....there will be a time in the near future when all will become vegan and then advance to even higher levels like breatharians or live on light
          • I understand your point too, it's not easy to many folks to make solid decissions : way too many excuses.

on the other hand , the one who really believes in changes , will make that decission in less time than over~night........many had.............

  • Bless these wonderful creatures as they have given so much. May they have the respect and nurture we ALL deserve.

    Namaste :-D
