At all times there were people claiming a more or less deeper relation between the world appearing outside and the world inside of an observing subject.
Rene Descartes made a distinction between res cogitans (the mental) and res extensa (the physical) thus pointing to a dualism.
Anyway, everybody may find for him/herself an answer on how close inner and outer world might be or not.
In topology (part of math) there is a thing called Klein`s Bottle, in which there is no inner or outer part, but all in one.
