I believe that the Hills saw something on their way back home from Canada, but I'm almost certain that it wasn't aliens from outer space. Whatever and whoever they were wanted the Hills to believe they were being abducted by aliens. Otherwise, what was done to them if done by earthly beings would have been illegal (kidnapping) and if caught they would have been prosecuted. My first point would be a drawing that Barney Hill made under hypnosis. In it he shows where they were abducted, the trail that leads to what he believes is a flying saucer, and some other details that are significant.

Here we are shown that the abductors have stopped the Hills about a half of a block from the saucer's position. They lead the Hills through the woods to the saucer. Why go through all that when it would have been easier to have stopped their car where the saucer was practically parked by the side of the road. In an email to Betty Hill's niece I pointed out this fact and she answered that the embankment was very steep at that part of the road. I did a check of my own of that stretch of road and found no high embankments that would impede an easy walk to the ship. A more believable answer would have been "I don't know" than to give one that is so condescending. I was going to bring up the next point in the drawing but decided not to entertain her or myself. However, look at Barney's drawing of the saucer. Looks like one, doesn't it? It's round like a flying saucer, it's lit up like a saucer, but there is one thing wrong with the drawing. How did Barney know it was round? It might have been flat in the back. He had no way of knowing unless he just assumed it was round. What if he was being taken towards an 18 wheeler truck, partially obscured by trees to hide any incriminating evidence of what it really was. From this perspective it could've been anything he wanted, but because of a subconscious assumption he believed it was a flying saucer and drew it as such.

The next point but not the last was the interior of the ship as described by Betty. The furniture had a futuristic appearance to it, the table for the physical observation looked other worldly. There was a book which Betty tried to take off the ship and also a map of some sort. Everything in this room was everything one might expect to see in a science fiction b movie from the 50s or 60s, depending on the budget. The point I'm making with this is that had Betty and Barney had experienced this abduction today they would have been laughed off the stage for making references to this poorly constructed otherworldly interior.

The book Betty picked up is also a point of discussion. Here we have a bunch of aliens with a vast amount of intelligence, assumed to be light years ahead of us by comparison, and the best they can do to house their information is in an archaic book. This was in the early 60s so the strange book written with strange hieroglyphs might have been believable as something from outer space. And yet us lowly, almost primitive earthlings had managed in a short span of 40 years to develop an alternative to books with PCs, laptops, Kindles and the like.

The biggest con coming out of that same room was the fabled star map Betty marvelled at. She was even able to construct a drawing from memory under hypnosis. A lot of theories were brought about from that star map, most of them intelligent in nature but all are equally wrong. As this would be a long explanation that I'd be glad to bring up at another time where we could comfortly conduct a discussion, it will have to wait until the next time.
