The Beatles hold the Guinness Book of World Records for the most sales of musical recordings by a musical group, which is approximately 2,303,500,000 albums sold (according to Statistic Brian). They also had the number one slot for all-time sales of a single recording ("Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band") for many years before it would be outsold in numbers by Michael Jackson's "Thriller" LP in the 1980's.
Early History Of The Group
The Beatles derived the insect name for the band from Texas-based rockers Buddy Holly and The Crickets. The band started out as The Quarrymen (with original Beatles John Lennon and George Harrison in the line-up), but had the name changed to The Silver Beetles (which was Quarrymen bassist Stu Sutcliffe's idea; the reference to Buddy Holly's group was the reported rationale). John Lennon would have the name changed to The Beatles, with the spelling changed to reflect the word "beat." Stuart Sutcliffe would leave the band in 1961, and get replaced with Paul McCartney that year. Pete Best stayed on as the band's drummer.
Brian Epstein was an LP record shop owner and music columnist in England with a reputation for intense management, being on time with everything, and doing everything in writing. He also prided himself on his knowledge of what artists had good sales in his shop. When a lot of young women customers began pestering him about a recording by a group called the Beatles (which he never heard of at that time), he investigated and immediately wanted to become their manager. The Beatles agreed to sign him on in January of 1962, for a fee of 25% of the bands earnings.
The summer of 1962 featured the Beatles first major recording session with EMI Records, with George Martin hired to be their producer and sound engineer. The popularity of the group in Liverpool was growing, and getting intense.
Brian Epstein also began designing his marketing plan that summer for The Beatles with plans for international exposure for both most of England and with Germany (note that there are versions of "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves You" on "The Beatles - Past Masters Vol. I" sang in German by the group).
Epstein's plans for fashion designs and hair-styles for the group were extreme, at least to them at that time. The band's leather jackets had to go, and would be replaced with black suits, white shirts, and black ties. The uneven and rough hairstyles also had to go, and would be replaced by variations of the late 1950's popular Germany-based "mop-top" hair style (which was actually used and first noted internationally by Moe of the U.S. comedy group "The Three Stooges"). John Lennon reportedly raised hell about turning in his leather jacket, but eventually agreed. Drummer Pete Best, who was reportedly the best looking member of the band (at that time) and who also had the most fans REFUSED Brian Epstein's directives for the bands image.
After complaints by recording and sound engineer George Martin, numerous different drummers were auditioned and tried out with the songs "Please Please Me," "P.S. I Love You,"and "Love Me Do." Drummer Ringo Starr (Richard Starkey) of Rory Storm and The Hurricanes showed the most promise and skill with the songs, and received the best consideration for possibly replacing Pete Best as the drummer for The Beatles with the recordings.
It is unknown if replacing Pete Best with Ringo Starr (for both touring and recording purposes) was initially considered at the behest of Brian Epstein or George Martin, as both had a great deal of control over the business affairs of the group at that time.
Pete Best states that he was called into Brian Epstein's Liverpool office on Thursday, August 16, 1962, and told that he was fired (and replaced with Ringo Starr) sometime between 10:30 AM and 11:00 AM. The exact time of Epstein's announcement is unknown, but because Brian Epstein was fanatical about being on time, 10:30 AM was selected as the best and most probable time since it would be a logical time-set to begin a business meeting, as opposed to "10:44 AM" or "10:35 AM."
On Saturday, August 18, 1962, The Beatles performed at The Cavern Club for the first time with Ringo Starr as their drummer (and were physically attacked and beaten up afterwards by the fans of Pete Best (and Brian Epstein had his car tires slashed)).
THE AUGUST 16, 1962 DATE (AT 10:30 AM) IS THE DATE, TIME, AND PLACE THAT SEEMS MOST PROBABLE FOR THE BEGINNING OF THE MUSICAL GROUP CALLED THE BEATLES, WITH RINGO STARR AS THEIR DRUMMER. THIS IS BECAUSE A FORMAL DECISION WAS ANNOUNCED TO THE CONCERNED PARTIES INVOLVED IN THE BUSINESS .
The horoscope chart for the time of this event is below, and what a very spectacular chart it is, especially for an artistic-related business or endeavor:
Neptune ("disappointments, deception, service, drugs, art, spiritual insight") is in the second house ("cash holdings, current assets"). From a business astrology perspective, this is not an ideal placement for Neptune. But Neptune is also in a strong harmonious trine angle with Jupiter ("luck, expansion, travel, philosophy, law") and with Chiron ("advanced or other-worldly technology") in the horoscope's fifth house ("entertainment, fun amusement, speculation"). Anyone who studied my free notes supplied on Ashtar knows that even though Neptune is non-compatible with all of the planets due to deceptive and disappointing qualities of the planet, Neptune can work with good and harmonious combinations with Jupiter or Venus with exposure of the artistic or spiritual areas that are a part of Neptune's energies.
The Midheaven (the point in the sky directly above the event) is conjunct the star of Dziban, and this star is related to artistic ability, much travel, many friends, and a danger of robbery or accidental poisoning. Note that after Brain Epstein died, outsiders managed to get into the financial circle of The Beatles and tried to financially drain them (especially the Maharishi Yogi, who John Lennon referred to in his song "Sexy Sadie" with the line "look what you've done...you made a fool of everyone" (after the Maharishi convinced The Beatles not to attend Epstein's funeral and to stay with him)). A boutique shop set up by The Beatles called The Apple Boutique reportedly had employees that embezzled money from The Beatles, and people in important financial circles (who understood key areas of entertainment law) tried to buy some very key aspects of The Beatles' contracts related to royalties for pennies on the dollar (and some, notably Sir Lew Grade, would succeed in such. Michael Jackson would eventually buy these same rights from Sir Lew).
Venus ("art, relationships, harmony with others") is very close to conjunction with the Ascendant ("general image, the environment") and both placements are in Venus' ruling sign of Libra. Venus is also in a good harmonious trine with Saturn ("older people, authority figures, restrictions, limitations") in the fourth house ("the building or the home-base of the business"). Finally, note the stars of Diadem ("personal charm, suave, well-bred") and Porrima ("courteous, refined, lovable") are also equal to Venus and the Ascendant.
Not to sound extreme, but I will say this in reference to this Venus conjunct Ascendant placement: YOU COULDN'T ASK FOR A BETTER PLACEMENT OF ART-RELATED VENUS FOR DEFINING THE IMAGE OR APPEARANCE (which is the traditional Ascendant definition) RELATIVE TO A GROUP OF ARTISTS DOING ARTWORK THAT MAY OFFEND OLDER PEOPLE AND AUTHORITIES (which is a traditional Saturn definition), OF WHICH THE BEATLES DID AS THEY BECAME VERY POPULAR IN THE EARLY 1960's.
For those of you who haven't read my free astrology notes supplied on Ashtar, the Sun traditionally represents the CEO of a corporation or the leader of a business (as well as "attention" from the business or upon the business from a public perspective), and the Moon represents the employees of the business, as well as the customers of the business (and people in general on a mundane or elective astrology basis).
The Sun is not afflicted with anything on the horoscope and is well placed in it's ruling sign of Leo (which rules "entertainment, teaching, speculation, and 'center of attention'"). The star of Subra ("strength, simple, plunder") is described by Vivian Robson as a Mars/Saturn type of energy, and Uranian astrology defines Mars/Saturn energy as "death, hard work, and depression;" these are all qualities to unfortunately manifest and surface with the life of Brian Epstein (manager of The Beatles) as the group became a phenomena.
The Moon ("the employees of the business and the customers of the business") is in the fifth house ("entertainment, fun amusement, speculation") and is in a strong opposition with Uranus ("revolutionary, shocking, or different approach to business and sales; unusual friends and associates; use of technology or science in unusual or interesting ways in the business").
The employees (i.e. The Beatles) and their fans (i.e. those numerous screaming young women fans (and their rocker boyfriends)) were definitely unusual per social definitions and norms at that time.
Mercury ("media coverage and communications related to the business") is in it's co-ruling sign of Virgo, and is in conjunction with Pluto ("transformation, profound change, crisis") in the eleventh house (allies and associates of the business; aspirations or goals of the business) and conjunct the star of Zosma ("keen intellect, depression, restrictions, prophetic ability"). This combination of Mercury and Pluto is also in a strong opposition with Jupiter ("luck, expansion, travel, philosophy, law") and also in opposition with Chiron ("advanced or other-worldly technology"), with Jupiter and Chiron placed in the fifth house ("entertainment, fun amusement, speculation").
This defines "good luck with communications (Mercury opposite Jupiter) and successful media coverage of the business (especially related to fifth house matters (i.e. entertainment)) in ways that are transforming in a powerful manner that will probably be successful and expansive (Pluto opposite Jupiter)."
AGAIN, YOU COULDN'T ASK FOR A BETTER PLANETARY PLACEMENT FOR A GROUP OF ARTISTS DOING ARTWORK THAT MAY OFFEND OLDER PEOPLE AND AUTHORITIES, WHICH THE BEATLES DID AS THEY BECAME VERY POPULAR IN THE EARLY 1960's.
In the case of the Mercury-Pluto-Jupiter-Chiron placement, it would be the public exposure of the group, which The Beatles would eventually become unbelievably successful with on both a local and international basis.
Finally, let's look at Mars. Mars is a very important component of the business horoscope, as it represents the defined actions of the business organization and the ability of the organization to compete against other similar organizations.
Mars is well-placed in the ninth house ("international views and involvement, the law, religion, philosophy"), and the horoscope's ninth house is ruled by communications-ruling Mercury (which is very well-placed, as previously described). But Mars is in a stressful sesquiquadrate angle (135 degrees) with Neptune ("disappointments, deception, service, drugs, art, spiritual insight") and Neptune is placed in the second house ("cash holdings, current assets").
Because the ninth house has religion as one of it's defining aspects (and The Beatles were viewed and treated like religious sages with some of their fans in the 1960's), the subject of religion would undoubtedly and curiously creep into analysis of The Beatles from both a private and public perspective.
Mars is in the ninth house, and as mentioned, is forming a stressful aspect to Neptune ("disappointments, deception") in the second house ("cash, current assets"). THE MARS-NEPTUNE COMBINATION ("deceptive or disappointing actions") WOULD HAVE A NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THE GROUP'S FINANCIAL STATUS (per Neptune in the second house) BASED ON COMMUNICATIONS AND ACTIONS OF THE GROUP'S COMMUNICATIONS AND ACTIONS WITH RELIGION (per Mars in Gemini and in the ninth house).
This was clearly demonstrated with Lennon's quote of "The Beatles more popular than Jesus" comment (which cost them dearly with record sales) and the financial involvement with the Maharishi Yogi, who turned out to be a nothing more than a con-artist who publicly humiliated the group by convincing them not to go to Brian Epstein's funeral.
The Ed Sullivan Show
The Ed Sullivan Show performance would be a very significant boost for The Beatles, having a record-breaking television viewing audience (at that time) of approximately 73 million people (which was approximately 43 percent of all television sets in the United States tuned in on their performance).
The Beatles' Ed Sullivan Show performance had an incredible impact on the United States viewing audience. Interestingly, George Harrison claimed that there were no crimes committed in the United States during the first six minutes of their first performance on The Ed Sullivan Show!!!!

The Ed Sullivan Show features the transiting Moon ("the population or the business customers on a mundane or world basis") and the transiting North Node ("connections with or a means of connecting to") in opposition with each other, and their midpoint is equal to The Beatles horoscope's placements of Venus and the Ascendant.
THIS IS A DIRECT CONNECTION (North Node) OF THE IMAGE AND APPEARANCE OF THE GROUP (Venus and the Ascendant) WITH THE PEOPLE AND CUSTOMERS AT LARGE (the Moon). You couldn't get a better astrology placement for a presentation of your business, especially if it is art (Venus) related!!!
The Ed Sullivan Show also has transiting Uranus minutes away from conjunction with The Beatle's Pluto in the eleventh house ("shocking transformation of associates, aspirations, and goals of the business") and transiting Uranus is also minutes away from opposing The Beatles' Jupiter in the fifth house ("surprising and shocking success in areas related to speculation, entertainment, and amusement").
The Beatles And Brian Epstein Get Introduced To Marijuana By Bob Dylan In New York (Just Prior To The Filming Of "Help!")
I consider this event to be important, because the music of The Beatles would drift away from their signature "bubble gum" rock & roll style and explore other various worldly styles (more profoundly) after Dylan's introduction of marijuana to the group.
John Lennon had reportedly smoked marijuana while performing in his early Germany years, but reportedly had very mild results. Bob Dylan had "the good stuff," and wanted to get stoned with The Beatles, thinking The Beatles smoked pot based on a line from their song "I Want To Hold Your Hand." Dylan interpreted the line "I can't hide...I can't hide" with the erroneous interpretation of "I get high..I get high."
John Lennon explained to Dylan the correct verse of the song, and he (along with Brian Epstein and the other Beatles) smoked a joint with Dylan of what was reported to be excellent grade marijuana on August 28, 1964, at the Delmonico Hotel in New York City. Epstein was impressed, and he reportedly stated "I am as high as the ceiling!"
I could not find out the time of this event, but the meeting of Dylan and The Beatles reportedly started in the early evening hours. I selected a time with Neptune (which rules drugs) directly above in the sky, as this seemed appropriate and also was in the early evening hour between 5 PM and 6 PM. The chart of this event (with The Beatles horoscope) is below:
The Beatles horoscope midpoint placement of Sun/North Node ("connections with the leader of the organization" or "attention on or from the organization from a public perspective") is equal to the midpoint of the smoke-out event's transiting Neptune ("drugs") and the transiting Moon ("the customers, the public at large, the employees").
I interpret this T-square drawn above as "a change in the attention of the organization and (possibly) artistic views of the group (midpoint of Sun/North Node) after the employees of the organization (the Moon) got stoned on some high grade marijuana (Neptune)."
Also note that transiting Uranus is still in a strong opposition with the Jupiter placement on the The Beatles natal horoscope chart, so the aspect of "surprising and shocking good news" associated with this transit (Uranus opposition Jupiter) no doubt continued with Dylan introducing his personal stash with them; he reportedly gave them some as a going away present just prior to filming of "Help!"
The influence of Bob Dylan on The Beatles was no doubt profound. The first sign of this was probably seen shortly after their marijuana experiment with their music in the movie "Help!" Check out a cover band called The Bootleg Beatles doing John Lennon's very Bob Dylan-like song called "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" from the film "Help." I think this was a very note-worthy change with The Beatles music (compared to their musical style before meeting Dylan). And yes, all of The Beatles admitted to being stoned during certain parts of the taping of the movie, especially with scenes involving film takes in Switzerland.
The Shea Stadium Performance
The Beatles entered the stage and performed at Shea Stadium on August 15, 1965, at 9:16 PM. It would break all attendance records for an entertainment venue at that time (with 55,000 people in attendance) and set a financial record in the entertainment industry for the largest gross profit (i.e. sales minus cost of goods sold) that was ever made at that time with net proceeds of $304,000.00.
Vox Amplifiers also helped out with the group and designed special 100 watt amplifiers for the occasion (called "Super Beatle" amplifiers), and these high powered amplifiers were still not loud enough for the group to hear themselves over the screaming fans at times.
Paul McCartney reportedly felt that he was introducing the songs on a jet runway with the jets taking off when he announced them.
The Beatles were the number one act in show business at this time; the horoscope of the event (with The Beatles horoscope) is below:
The Shea Stadium performance featured a transiting T-square in the sky taking place with Venus ("art, relationships, harmony") weakly opposing the Shea Stadium event's Ascendant placement ("the environment") while Jupiter ("good luck, expansion") fairly equaled this midpoint between Venus and the Ascendant.
This T-square took place while transiting Jupiter was minutes away from conjuncting the Beatles natal Mars placement; Jupiter conjunct Mars transit ("fortunate action, lucky activity,success at work") is a classic lucky transit used by astrologers for planning important actions for clients (and no, I don't know if Brian Epstein used astrology). Again, another spectacular transit relative to the natal chart of the business.
John Lennon Tells The British Newspaper The Daily Mirror That The Beatles Are More Popular Than Jesus (oops, bad idea)
Below is the horoscope of the approximate date and time that the infamous quote from Lennon appeared in the Daily Mirror as it hit the stands in Great Britain:
Transiting Neptune ("disappointments, deception") is still in The Beatles' second house of "money and current assets" and was forming a hard square to The Beatles' natal Sun position ("attention on or attention from the organization from a public perspective") at the time of Lennon's slip of the tongue.
This transit could and did hurt record sales of the group.
THE BEATLES WOULD FINANCIALLY LOSE A LOT WITH A HUGE DROP IN RECORD SALES TAKING PLACE AFTER THIS COMMENT WAS MADE FROM LENNON. THIS IS REGARDLESS OF HOW ACCURATE THE STATEMENT WAS, AT LEAST AT THAT POINT IN TIME.
Also note that The Beatles placement of Mars in the ninth house ("activities and/or publications involving law, religion, philosophy, or long distance travel") is getting a sharp and conflicting square with transiting Mars in the sixth house ("criticism, health troubles, arguments") at that time. A conflict over something religion-based or philosophy-based was probable with this transit, and it happened.
Finally, the transiting North Node is coming off of a sharp square with The Beatles Uranus placement in the eleventh house of the Beatles chart. The North Node rules "connections," and Uranus rules "surprises."
This event would be a very big surprise for them, and a disappointing one with the strong presence of transiting Neptune forming a square to the natal Sun placement.
More Bad News For The Beatles: The Death Of Brian Epstein
Beatles manager Brian Epstein returned to his Kingsley country home on Friday, August 25, 1967, close to midnight. This would be the last time he would be seen alive by anyone; he was found dead in his bedroom on Sunday, August, 27, 1967, at close to 11:00 AM.
No foul play was suspected; Brian Epstein was reportedly drinking and taking carbitral (a barbiturate sleeping aid) which can be a lethal combination.
The horoscope of Brian Epstein's death (with The Beatles horoscope) is below:
Mars and Neptune are in conjunction ("disappointing action") and are both together in the second house of the Epstein death chart ("finances, cash, and current assets"). Both are also in opposition with the death chart Moon placement ("the public at large; the employees or customers of the business") in the eighth house ("secrets, banking, wills, legacies, death").
The midpoint of this opposition just described equals The Beatles horoscope natal Sun placement ("the CEO or leader of the company").
THIS INTERPRETATION INVOLVING THE MIDPOINT OF THE MARS-NEPTUNE PLACEMENT AND THE MOON PLACEMENT OF THE DEATH OF BRIAN EPSTEIN (and with this midpoint equal to the Sun placement of The Beatles horoscope chart) IS VERY BASIC AND IS AS FOLLOWS: "employees and customers of the company (the Moon) would encounter a disappointing action (Mars-Neptune) involving the leader of the company (The Beatles Sun position) that these individuals work for and buy products from."
Also note that Saturn is in transit and very close to the Descendant area of the seventh house. This is a classic transit interpretation that calls for "a divorce of some kind."
The Beatles Break-Up
Troubles would pile up big time for The Beatles after Epstein's death, as The Beatles had relied on him completely to handle their finances and the business side of their product. Brian Epstein went from a record shop owner in Liverpool to a major league player in the entertainment industry in a matter of a few years, and was forced to immediately learn all about the intricacies of entertainment law, contracts, tax consequences, and finances that were related to the entertainment industry and how these legal areas affected his organization known as The Beatles, the hottest entertainment act in modern history at that time.
Brian Epstein learned and knew how to spot con artists in the entertainment industry; the members of his business organization called The Beatles could not. And with Brian Epstein gone, getting financially taken advantage of (Neptune in the second house) became a problem with The Beatles, especially from financial con artists in high places who understood entertainment law and contract law related to royalties.
The stress of "legally watching ones back" took its toll with Ringo being the first Beatle to actually announce he wanted to leave the group in August of 1968, but it was reported as being a very temporary gesture. George Harrison reportedly felt that he was left out of the spotlight as an important component of the Beatles long enough, and walked out during the "Get Back" sessions on January 10, 1969 (but returned shortly afterwards as Lennon tried to replace him with Eric Clapton, who Paul and Ringo didn't want as his replacement).
Yoko Ono had NOTHING to do with the breakup of The Beatles. The breakup was mainly due to tension between Paul and the other three members of the group as a result of ex-Rolling Stones manager Allen Klein being voted in to become the manager of The Beatles, as opposed to entertainment law firm attorneys John Eastman and Lee Eastman (who were both related to Linda Eastman, Paul's future wife).
Allen Klein was definitely not free of any slime; Keith Richards claims Klein ripped off the Rolling Stones good. To this day, all original members of the Rolling Stones did not and still do not receive one penny in royalties whenever "Satisfaction" is played on any radio station or any commercial; all royalties went to Allen Klein while he was alive and currently go to the estate of Allen Klein. This was due to "clever" contract manipulation done by Allen Klein while he was with the Rolling Stones organization; Mick Jagger reportedly warned members of The Beatles about what Klein did to them when he was considered for the management position of The Beatles.
Nevertheless, George, John, and Ringo voted for Klein anyway. Paul responded by declaring that nobody would legally represent him or his interests except the Eastman's legal services. This animosity would lead to business troubles within the organization and tension among all the members of the group, and eventually result in the breaking up of the organization known as The Beatles.
There was no formal announcement to the public of a direct break-up of The Beatles until April 10, 1970, Friday morning, with The Daily Mirror British newspaper hitting the newspaper stands. With huge letter fonts stating "PAUL IS QUITTING THE BEATLES," the McCartney interview went viral.
I give 6:00 AM as the approximate time the newspaper hit the stands:
Slow moving and transiting Neptune ("disappointments") leaves the sign of Scorpio during the breakup of The Beatles and enters the sign of Sagittarius during this time; Neptune is still in The Beatles second house of "cash, current assets, and financial holdings" at this time as well. This Neptune placement is equal to the midpoint of The Beatles fifth house Moon placement ("the employees and customers of the organization") and the eleventh house Uranus placement ("allies, associates of the organization, aspirations and goals of the organization").
JUST AS TRANSIT NEPTUNE SQUARE THE NATAL SUN PLACEMENT REPRESENTED "disappointments for the leader of the organization" (with the death of Epstein), TRANSIT NEPTUNE SQUARE THE NATAL MOON PLACEMENT REPRESENTED "disappointments for the employees and customers of the organization."
And with transiting Neptune square the Beatles Uranus placement also taking place with this event, "disappointments for allies, friends, and the aspirations/goals of the organization" was also probable and eminent.
Transiting Saturn ("restrictions, limitations") is in The Beatles eighth house of "banking, insurance, and death," and is in a hard opposition with The Beatles Neptune placement in the second house. This may represent "an imposed restriction or hindering upon the deceptions or glamour involving money or financial resources."
In summary, it is fair to say that all of The Beatles probably got fed up with trying to figure out and manage the incredible and complex legal maze that Brian Epstein set up. Brian Epstein set up legal barriers to financially protect The Beatles from slime-balls who wanted to steal from them, and the Fab Four simply wanted to relax for a change and do their own thing without a lawyer telling them how to run their lives due to fear of others grabbing a piece of The Beatles. The Beatles were all financially well-off at that time, and they may have become tired of being the most sought-after act in entertainment history. They were also probably tired of being the most sought after entertainment act for financial reasons, with everyone "trying to get a piece of the action." Hence, the break-up of The Beatles may have been needed to save the members of The Beatles from a lot of mental anguish and exhaustion taking place in the name of money- addiction and blatant greed of others in the entertainment business.
The downside of this was the angry reaction of the fans of The Beatles; I can still remember the incredible hatred back in the 1970's over claims from Beatle fans that Yoko Ono broke up the group (and she really didn't; it was all about Allen Klein versus the Eastmans). I also remember (LMAO) in 1980 when Saturday Night Live offered a check of $3000 for a Beatles reunion (AND JOHN LENNON AND PAUL McCARTNEY WERE WATCHING THIS SHOW AT THE LENNON'S NEW YORK CONDO AT THAT TIME, AND WERE ACTUALLY DISCUSSING ABOUT GOING DOWN TO SNL STUDIOS TO COLLECT IT!!!) I feel that the break-up was a smart move. One can be a public performer for only so long before wear and tear takes place, and breaking up may have prevented severe breakdown for the members of The Beatles. They all badly needed time to be with their families, and they all badly needed rejuvenation from a psychological and physical perspective. And the breakup of the band allowed this badly needed time-out.
