Controversial whaling proposal abandoned at IWC talks

[LINK]
A deal that would have overturned a 24 year ban on commercial whaling has been defeated at the International Whaling Commission conference in Morocco, delivering a victory for Australia. Some anti-whaling nations like New Zealand and the United States had supported the controversial proposal which would have seen Japan give up its whale catch in the Antarctic in return for being able to commercially whale in its own waters. But talks reached a stalemate with Australia and South American nations, arguing the plan was flawed and dangerous.

  • I don't know the ins and outs, but from what I've heard, the outcome is better than what would've been a very bad compromise. There is no more room for compromise - this has gone on long enough. In the end, I think it will only be sustained outrage from Japan's own citizens that will bring their commercial whaling to an end, together with the rest of us global citzens keeping up protest action. I don't think politicians are going to solve this. Japanese whaling in their 'own' waters is bad enough, but coming down to the Southern Ocean and Antarctic waters is outrageous.
    • I absolutely agree with you Merryn and from what I can gather from my Japanese daughter in law, the 'ordinary' Japanese very rarely eats whale meat and it is not something they think of when they think of eatin...which they think of a lot...:)..
I think Green Peace worked on the ground in Japan to educate the people and when even the small percentage of the 'average' Japanese does not eat it, then it becomes much more obvious that that meat (..the killing and bloodshed) is in the name of greed, for the rich and priviledged from around the globe...
If you have anough cash apparently, you can oprder your own batch from the catch...

Oh God, we need more light....:)..:)..sigh...

"Orange is their colour, and maybe a trip to Mars? Clearing out the loonies was long overdue, but it’s already happening. Getting the right federal judges in place is a much quicker way to get the wheels turning in favour of the plan."
