Online chat based communication will in time make better communicators of all us.

It is inevitable that this will happen if we are to overcome the compromises inherent in this language.

Communication is about so much more than than words.

The actual content of words make a mere 5% of the communication.

Tonality makes up approx 35%

And body language makes up the rest.

Even more indefinable is the syntax.

The structure of language.

So in and of themselves, the content of the words, the story, plays a very small role in the overall message.

The vast majority of a communication is in fact metaphorical.

It is just that in face to face communication, we seldom pay attention to the metaphor.

It is communicated out of conscious awareness.

Leaving only the the story open to conscious critiquing.

And from the perspective of the unconscious, the story barely rates a mention as compared to the syntax.

This is a major issue facing online chat.

Learning how to compensate for the massive shortfall in communicated information.

And this takes time and effort to over come.

It is the reason arguments occur.

We are having to use syntax and linguistic metaphor as a means of compensating for a lack of body language.

Differing levels of intensity must compensate for a lack of tonality and inflection.

It is why the use of metaphor and personal experience is unavoidable in my opinion.

In the hope that the picture you paint triggers the appropriate thoughts and emotions in the recipient.

That it will provides the listener with a common frame of reference to you.

Ultimately text based chat will make more articulate communicators of us all.

And part of this process of improvement is the large sized comments that you see.

It is not a behaviour to be criticized in my opinion.

Rather it should be applauded that people are making an effort in both time and energy to convert to words something that they would normally communicate with the flick of an eye.

Or a smile.

Or a raised finger.

It is why people use photos along with text.

As a means of better conveying the intent of their message.

"The meaning of a communication is the response it elicits" is a sound principal of communicative accountability.

"This is my message, and thus it is my responsibility to be flexible in how I go about communicating it.." (the law of requisite variety)

"Because my message matters to me".

The recipient doesn't have the vested interest in your message that you do.

They have their map of the world and they will interpret your message through their filters.

We all do this

It is natural.

And so the person communicating is obliged to step into the other persons world and see life through their eye so that they may more effectively get their message across.

The importance of this cannot be underestimated.

If you consider the word blue.

At face value, it is just a colour.

And yet, if you ask ten people what the word blue means to them you'll get ten different answers.

(or eight, or maybe seven).

And beyond the meaning of the word there is the intangible aspect of semantic loading that the word blue induces.

This was brought to light yesterday when I was talking to someone who struggles reading white text on a blue background.

They are frustrated before they read a single word.

And this highlights another problem with online chat.

It is not enough for the person delivering the message to be flexible.

It is now more than ever equally important for the recipient to do the same.

Effective online communication must be a team effort.

It must be appreciated that the person delivering the message doesn't have the luxury of body language to assist them.

And the choice of inflections are limited to . ! ?

They don't have on offer the infinite range of subtleties that the spoken inflection does.

If as a listener you aren't prepared to meet the speaker half way you should in fairness remove yourself from the conversation.

Because an argument is inevitable.

In truth however, there are always more than one person in every argument.....

And then we come to syntax.

The language of the unconscious.

If they eyes are the doorway to the soul then syntax is the linguistic, logical equivalent.

It is syntax, without the aid of inflection and body language to clarify the message, that is the cause of much of the misunderstandings in text based chat.

And It is in syntax where the greatest scope of improving how we communicate with each other lay.

Essentially. syntax describes a persons thought and emotional processes in a manner that is outside of conscious awareness.

It is a persons individual style.

And it s in the coming together of syntax's that problems occur.

Someone who walks around with a storm cloud over their head all the time will use syntax in a manner  that communicates this.

Not obviously perhaps,

But the unconscious will recognize it.

Syntax will communicate a dirty look.

Or a smile.

Or a rough day.

Or excitement.

It is in deciphering syntax that we are able to recognize spoken truth.

Or otherwise.

Syntax is the tool that emotionally loads our communications.

It is the reason that we get upset at words on a screen.

Because the unconscious is incapable of communicating anything other than the truth of your sate of being.

And we see this when people try to consciously manipulate their syntax to present a front.

It never sits quite right.

No matter what the words on the screen tell you.

It is the reason we question someone who's words suggest they are having a good day.

Because we recognize the syntax is not consistent with how they normally write.

The unconscious recognizes the fabrication.

So if syntax is the holy grail of text based chat, and it can't be effectively manipulated, what can we do?

We may not be able to manipulate, but we can chose our words more carefully.

I also believe that the grammar of text based conversation needs to develop in a manner that is appropriate to the language.

Text based chat is much more dynamic than writing a novel.

The grammar need to allow for this.

(This is a work in progress in my opinion. It has come a long way over the early phone text message days)

The good news about syntax is it evolves as we evolve.

It responds instantly to changes in states of consciousness.

In the same manner that the eyes stop flicking around in a seemingly random fashion, (it isn't random. It is the communication of thought process), in the sockets of someone who has found peace in themselves.

So to does syntax become more consciously coherent.

There is so much more that can be said about syntax.

And it is something that I recommend anyone serious about effective communication, both online and otherwise research.

It is the means by which we take conscious control of the power of the spoken and written word.

Whilst there are clearly issues to overcome with text based chat as compared to spoken conversation, text chat does have one advantage.

The communication isn't complete until you press send.

You have time to vett every word you say before sending it.

You have the opportunity to think about the intended outcome of your communication.

When words fall out of your mouth in a moment of anger, you don't have the opportunity to make a list and check it twice.

Once the words are said, they are said.

So the phrase, "I was upset, I didn't mean what i said" is plausible.

When you have the opportunity to go over a conversation over and over again before committing to it, the excuse I didn't mean it doesn't stand up to scrutiny quite so well.

You did mean it.

Because you wrote it.

And then you read it.

And then you (perhaps) modified or rewrote it.

Again.

And again

And then you sent it.

And then after you sent it, you didn't delete it.

You left it there for the world to see.

Forever.

How could you not mean it?

  • I don't know mate, I don't watch tv .

    I don't follow politics.

iI do work hard to make my own communication the best it can be,

Because that is the best I can do..

    She's a good communicator.

I know exactly what she's thinking...

    Must be telepathy.

  • Yeppas.

    Works for me.

    Thanks.

  • The chakras have everything to do with it Feather.

The way that I would word it though is our overall energy balance is weighted by how active our chakras are.

it is your overall energy balance that determines how you respond to differing frequencies.

Remember we are in a perpetual state of communication with our environment.

Talking to people is only one type of communication.

We get upset at our tv's

at the lawn mower that won't star.

It is all just an exchange of energy.

    SOme frequencies you embrace,

    some you reject.

    some you  attack.

    and some you flee from.

The heart can andwants to embraces all frequencies.

It speaks the language of compassion..

The vibration that contains within it all frequencies in harmony.

It is the same language for everyone. (this is why compassion unifies. our hearts all speak the same language.

The mind collates the total energy from the chakras.

It is the shortfall between the heart and mind that creates the miscommunication between people.

Because we all have a different energetic shortfall

It is our job to activate our chakras as much as possible so that the energetic shortfall is minimized.

    Hope I explained it ok.

  • Communication in all its form is nothing more than an exchange of energy Feather..

    Our words always betray us.

    Our ears hear the words.

And our hearts register the intent.

After the words have been filtered by the mind.

  • Language by its very nature is a living, dynamic, constantly evolving animal.

It has to be if it is to accurately reflect the change in consciousness that society goes through.

One of the side effects of this are the changing meaning of words.

Whilst a word never loses it meaning, it is not unusual for it to gain addition meanings as time does by.

Take the word gay for example..

    • The meaning of the word hasn't changed.

and yet we have naturally accepted its new meaning as a matter of course.

And this is why we must all remain flexible in our approach to communication.

It is important that we point out misunderstandings to each other early on in proceedings.

It is unreasonable to presume that the other person understands how we think.

It is our responsibility to make our thought process known to the person we are communicating with.as soon as we recognize  potential for misunderstanding.

Imagine a person from as little as 30 or 40 years ago moving forward in time to now using the word gay as the maker originally intended.

whilst the person has said nothing wrong, they ould be the subject of quiet ridicule until someone pointed this out to them.

We can always of making it easier for each other when it comes to communication.

it is nothing more than a change of focus from one that is adversiarial in nature, like it has been for the last few thousand years.

      To one of co-operation.

You learn something new every gay.
