  • How do you plan to protect yourself? You need a service sized pistol in either 9mm, 40, or 45. A few extra mags for said pistol and about 500 rounds of ammo. If you live in an area with large population density, i suggest a 12ga shotgun, Mossberg or Remington, with at least 500 shells. This is for defense from 2 legged threats. Now for small game hunting/defense, pick yourself up a ruger 10/22 and buy 5000 rounds of .22LR, its cheap enough, 550 rounds will cost you 10 bucks, this is the perfect solution for small game, rabbits, birds, etc. Its still lethal out to 300 yards with proper shot placement on a 2 legged threat. Know how to use each one properly, go to the range and practice with all 3.
  • Yes, I'll put it all in my backpack tonight.
    • Shoot, I was being sarcastic! We're all gonna be fine!
    • Yes, hopefully, we won't "need" these survival tools, but, better to have and not need than to need and not have. I would like to share a wonderful survival tool that I have actually used when I lived in Washington State and we had a 12-day power outtage from someone hitting a power pole with their car during a very cold winter period.

Take a large juice can, take out the cardboard core of a role of toilet tissue and saturate the toilet tissue roll with rubbing alcohol and light it with a match. This will burn for hours and provide BOTH light and warmth if you use it in one room and use several cans. It is relatively inexpensive to use alcohol. However, when the light starts to burn low, one has to re-saturate the toilet tissue. If one uses several of these cans, it gives sufficient light and heat to survive. A word of caution, however......you MUST keep a window cracked a little bit, or the fumes will overcome you.

This was suggested for use by a state trooper in the event of a traveller getting stranded in an automobile during a snow storm, or similar occurrences. I know the effectiveness of this tool and if I lived in a really cold climate, I would not be without this tool in a vehicle.

Again, hopefully, survival tools won't be needed, but better to be a good "boy scout".
  • Bear trap? (me confused......plse explain!) ;-)
  • Hiya.

Yeah, i thought the list was a bit "O.T.T." (over the top) too but nevertheless there's some good items mentioned there. And realistically, even if all you do is ensure you have access to good water or can sterilise water that is not so good, and haev matches, torches and batteries at the ready, you may be better off in an emergency. How would you get on if you had a prolonged powercut for instance? Of say, a few days duration?

By the way, the attached file is a biggie, 2.7MB but it has some really useful stuff and info in it. The US Army survival manual

My wishes are of course that we don't need this stuff, but like any good Boy Scout/ Girl Guide, it is better to be prepared!
    • Say what?! ;-) What's your frequency Joram? ;-)
    • Barron, you're an excellent Boy Scout!

Yep, the US Army survival manual has 277 pages. Perhaps a very helpful Boy Scout or US Army personnel can summarize the most important info relevant to civilians like most of us.

I've just forwarded your list to my mates and relos who live in the big smoke.
  • Great list. I have most of the stuff already together because I live in Florida who is prone to devastating hurricanes and power outs aplenty. Ever since Hurricane Charley shredded the town I live in and the neighboring Punta Gorda, I was quick to make a survival plan and supplies. Thanks for sharing this, there was stuff that I did not think of for sure.
  • GOOD LORD, BARRON!!!
Are you joining the army now, mate???!
Why would you need (7)?...Is it for jungle warfare... baseball match...
Why would you need rat poison (68) when you can trap the rats (69) and take them out of their misery quicker? Much better for your own health and the environment, too.
I'll need all of (24), and if I run out of shampoo, may I have some of yours please? Also your aftershave - for the dog.
Kidding aside, thank you for this very useful list of stuff to collect, just in case.
And I still wish you & yours a fantastic and very blessed 2010 and beyond.
