The pattern is about 250 metres in size and appears to be a labyrinth design, which historically has been used for religious, ritual and magic purposes.
Lucy Pringle, a founder member of the Centre for Crop Circle Studies in Sheet, said the mile long endless looping pattern is the "best this year."
She said: "To me its labyrinth design represents our journey through life. I think it's beyond the wit of man to produce something as intricate as this, as its geometric precision is highly accurate. But however it got there, to me it personifies the wonderful spirit of the Olympic Games."
The field, just yards from the A272, belongs to Peveril Bruce, owner of the Matterley Bowl estate, venue of the Boomtown music festival, and there has been speculation about a connection between festival-goers and the circle. The pattern was spotted by a passing lorry driver, whose high cab allowed him to look down into the wheat field to view it.
To some the mysterious pattern resembles the ancient Tibetan Buddhist symbol of an 'endless knot' illustrating the eternal flow of time, and many who follow the religion say it represents the wisdom of Buddha.
Amateur pilot Matthew Williams flew over the field and said: "I'm a bit of a sceptic, but I don't know who could have made such an intricate design."
By starting anywhere in the design it is possible to walk every yard of the pattern carved through the wheat, ending up back at the start point.
Crop circles mysteriously appear annually in fields from spring onwards and throughout the summer. Sceptics claim they are made by vandals or pranksters, but others say they are left by visiting aliens.
Lucy Pringle is hosting a talk at Petersfield Community Centre in Love Lane on Saturday, October 13, which will cover the crop circle phenomena. Doors open 6.45pm, for a 7.30pm start. Tickets are £8 on the door.

The vast majority of what I would attribute to ‘real’ ‘authentic’ crop circles is those that present themselves on Earth Ley Lines. That some ancient ‘drawings, carvings etc’ like the white horse and the long man and other 'drawings' are possibly depicting ley line, as well as the stone circles, and others such as single standing ‘obelisk’ stones and a lot of ancient abbeys and churches they maybe markers as well. As a lot of these crop circles are around these structures, so I’m of the opinion that there is a high likelihood that this ‘is not coincidence’.
There are unfortunately some that are clearly ‘fake’ (but still quite good) and made by human hand. Then there was the problem of the uncertainty and no real way of knowing how long some of these crop circles had been there before been discovered.
But as the authentic ones are always made in a specific way that people can not recreate there was a small chance they could also work out the length of time that the crop circle had stood before been discovered and reported. Which is good for investigators, as they can now use a method of authentication, and sort the ‘wheat from the chaff’, (sorry couldn’t help throwing that one in).
Why the ‘fakers’ would want to do this is bizarre, what are they trying to prove as they hide behind the anonymity. It is not very productive…..
people fake things to mock others, remember the strange sounds videos, there were lots of them, all with the same sound, taken from the 2000's war of the worlds film. and they do it because people will swallow it hook line and sinker, which we see daily here at ACC. people want to believe so badly in things that they will suspend logic and rational thinking so that the event fits their belief structure.
true crop cirles cannot be faked as you say. the reeds are bent and not broken. as for the ley lines theory although i share this particular belief myself, that the earth causes the cicles, there is the issue that not all circles appear on leylines.
it would be nice to know for certain what causes them before i die, and find bigfoot, and aliens for certain. perhaps bigfoot and the aliens get together and make the crop circles with their ships for fun :)
Carpet or rug, oddly my 9yr old thought that as well.
All joking aside......
‘Sceptics claim they are made by vandals or pranksters, but others say they are left by visiting aliens.’
Some maybe pranks, but made by aliens possibly though I’m of the opinion that the planet itself is creating them. Whether they are designed as a messsage to humanity or aliens that is open to debate.
Personally the pattern says to me; the large circle is Earth the interlinking inner pattern is representing all life and how we are all connected, the little circle is the moon. Just a passing thought, could be wrong, but whatever anyones opinion is on these beautiful and amazing designs, in the end we can only speculate on the meaning.
Pretty far out. Looks like a rug.
