"Dead Zone" Not at all a horror film as one might from assume, but a thoughtful meditation on the gift of empathic clairvoyance.....
I coin this term ,as Johnny, a character Chistopher Walken plays, recovers from a 5 yr coma. and discovers by touching someones hand. he has visions of their immediate & future experience.
Walken's acting is magnificent, and the story (book by Steven King) is heartfelt . poignant and multifaceted. What graphic elements that exist aren't gratuitous, and considering David Cronenberg directed it... are pretty mild. While not precisely a feel good movie. as a drama it has genuine heart ,compassion and an emotional sincerity that many new films lack. Not totally unlike Greek tragedy.
I'm a huge fan of Walken, especially his early roles in Brainstorm, Communion, of a consciousness researcher and admire much of Cronenbergs work... so it's a given I'd eventually rewatch this movie..... The dead zone refers to a psychic blind spot that proves to be an asset, in this story.

You may interested that they made of movie of the celestine prophecy, and what the bleep do we know, was awesome. If you've never seen I heart Huckabee's you are totally missing out. Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin as existential detectives, it's fabulous :)
Maianna,
That's cosmic.. I recently posted a thread on an Empath site about this.. regarding dreams involving celebs..
Had a dream about Shirley McClaine, some 20+ yrs ago, that we had lunch at her place... about the time she made that film...and I rewatched it 2 weeks ago, on the web. It was pretty daring for a celeb to come out publicly on such matters in those days...
thanx for the recommendations... I just rewatched Ressurection, with Ellen Bursten & Sam Sheppard .. about a healer.
re : Spirit Growth
"they cannot make sense of or handle the situation (in case of accidents, for example) and want to camouflage their insecurities." Yeah of course this makes perfect sense ...... though it seems weird to hear laughter when a dude gets killed-wiped out, in movie theater.
Finally watched "what the bleep" last month ......
This is the best film on crop circles I've come across ... a gazillion images of varied ones...\

Also this site has quite a few (free) docs on psychic, spiritual & such matters

Any interviews by Drunvalo, I try to catch..... prob seen just about all at youtube
Several folks said Celestine was FAR better as a book, so I passed on watching the movie.
Most EVERYONE hated Last Airbender... but I got a charge from it.
I'm still a fan of M Night Shyamalan .......He's damn gifted storyteller IMO ..... and the little f'cker really loves creating stories. I think he's bloody courageous to try the themes he has.
All those moviegoers, critics, who blast him should try writing a script themselves....
ALSO
Night Watch & Day Watch by Timur Bekmambetov
I swear he invented a new genre with Night Watch... certainly a new film aesthetic......
for a unique tale of battle of light-dark forces ........... I was simply stunned by Night Watch....
as revolutionary as Blade Runner .....in terms of aesthetics..... and a more lovable angel of light
I couldn't imagine .............sheer freaking genius ,,,,, the gloom, other devices, lots of wonderful& wicked characters ... a hugely underappreciated film. a classic IMO
Honestly Robby, The shows you have listed here, are really no different then the horror shows you had mentioned on here. I mean, there is still fighting going on, only difference with some of them, is the fact that they use swords instead of guns, and even then there is still fighting yet going on in these movies, and there are still character flaws in every show you watch
I mean you can sit there and say that this is all done in good nature, and this is done in something that you don't see in bloody details, but in reality though. They are still fighting each other yet with swords, and one of the shows you had named on here, they are fighting with Guns
It is no different, then watching shows where people are killing each other, and some really do prefer shows like this, that you had listed, but don't be so dam close minded to the ones where they have a different slant or twist on things
I mean, you mentioned how horrifying it is for kids to see some of this shit on Video Games. Seeing movies like you had mentioned here, would be just as horrifying for some to see, It all depends on who likes this kind of thing, and we aren't here to judge that
Being Spiritual means to be open to all sorts of things, and I have no problems with shows you have listed.
Just that SCFI, Adventures, Fantasy, all have fighting within the shows as well
Bless the Nite,
April
Well you do have a point, yet from my pov Night Watch IS (at it's core) a spiritual fable rather than just another macho shoot 'em up or teen slasher movie.
(Such moves do not have angels of light-dark , fighting over the earth's fate.)
And it's NOT for kids , as it's R rated.
beyond that...
Most of Shyamalan's stories are spiritual in intent from my viewpoint....(I've only seen the more optomistic ones)
One might well say Se7en is also a spiritual fable, of a far far darker-grimmer variety. Far too bleak for my taste however, as it's aesthetic virtually celebrates perverse ugliness far beyond what's needed to make the point.
this is strictly MY aesthetic judgement... I found it repulsive , aesthetically... exquisitely so. As you may recall, the detective discovers his young wife's head is in the package the killer delivers. A bit much , for me.
Really though..... I feel intent is a factor .....
There is lots of killing in many "religious" movies depicting for example Romans persecution of christians...or possibly Shindlers List (persecution of Jews) I hardly equate this with scenes from Texas Chainsaw Massacre (in term of "redeeming social value")
I'm no longer an impressionable kid, nor are you.....
I've heard that the average 14 yr old has seen 1500 murders on TV. Try and tell me that doesn't affect their view of life.
I seriously doubt ANY psychologist would disagree with me, about the overall corrosive influence of violent games-movies on youth. Do they REALLY need this at that point in life, before they've discovered how folks really live.
Guns are NOT toys, like arcade games... and people when shot with real guns, aren't pretty to see) That's really my point.... movies-games don't educate kids what weapons REALLY do to people, or peoples lives.
It's all make believe, fantasy till it happens and destroys peoples lives.
It's OK if we disagree, as we all have our own tastes-opinions-experiences. And the world will go on as it has.
Kids learn a lot by example ... what examples do we really want them to experience.
Roger Ebert wrote this and I quite agree... but it just ain't for me.
This & the Exorcist are a couple I films I regret seeing, that I don't need in my subconscious.
`Seven," a dark, grisly, horrifying and intelligent thriller,
may be too disturbing for many people,
I imagine, although if you can bear to watch, it you will see filmmaking of a high order.
Have been looking for films that have psychic or spiritual themes, and many are conspiracy themed. So I just look for stuff I can get some inspiration without a lot of carnage.
Dead Zone is just about a guy who finds himself gifted and how it impacts his life... Just rewatched Phenomena , with John Travolta .... A similar scenario with ... the same ending as it happens... both are heartfelt movies that I appreciate.
I love beautiful films of many sorts.
Close Encounters was one....long ago.... that had a profound effect on me... very nearly a "religious experience' as it woke me to my own ET ancestry and childhood experiences. When I saw the aliens I felt like someone hit my chest with a bat, and I started crying.....as some part of me woke up.
Regrettably, Speilburg seems to have embraced the negative alien viewpoint, to a large measure, after ET & Close Encounters.... though Super 8 was a delightful surprise.
Chris Walken is a strange bird, and very likely from a different place, IMO. Unfortunately he has been largely cast as the off center (yet often funny) bad guy....in many many roles.... I took a real liking to him after seeing him in Communion.
As far as kids ..... (April) I walked through the mall, video arcade.... and many many video games are battle-violence oriented ..... kinda dismayed at this...and (even in myself) I recognize the desensitization that occurs in movies with lots of gunplay .... ie James Bond types. Matrix, others ... the gad guys are cast as soulless clones like in a shooting gallery.... it's no wonder kids can shoot others with no problem... after playing such video games.. and watching so much carnage... with no apparent emotional consequence.
Teach kids to cooperate-negociate rather that do battle ..... is my feeling.
I know what some may say.... that's life on earth.
Imagine a benevolent ET, being from another galaxy... walking through the mall and seeing all this violent entertainment for kids , and all the similar media in movies-TV.
What do you feel they might say about it? Is it healthy, or corrosive to our spirit-imagination ?
Eh, I would have to say that this is up to us yet, as far as to what we watch and don't watch. I think that just because a person watches things like this, doesn't make them take a gun and shoot at people in the 3D. I think it all depends on what kind of person they are in the 3D, and if they take that gun and shoot people, they are going to find something rather then themselves to blame, for the action they had taken upon themselves, to hurt other people around them
Psychology teaches, people who do harm to others, need to take a good look at themselves.
Bless the Nite,
April
This is MY take .... some folks laugh at horror-slasher movies... but I just don't get it.
