WASHINGTON (AP) — An unusual nasty mix of a hurricane and a winter storm that forecasters are now calling "Frankenstorm" is likely to blast most of the East Coast next week, focusing the worst of its weather mayhem around New York City and New Jersey.
Government forecasters on Thursday upped the odds of a major weather mess, now saying there's a 90 percent chance that the East will get steady gale-force winds, heavy rain, flooding and maybe snow starting Sunday and stretching past Halloween on Wednesday.
Meteorologists say it is likely to cause $1 billion in damages.
The storm is a combination of Hurricane Sandy, now in the Caribbean, an early winter storm in the West, and a blast of arctic air from the North. They're predicted to collide and park over the country's most populous coastal corridor and reach as far inland as Ohio.
The hurricane part of the storm is likely to come ashore somewhere in New Jersey on Tuesday morning, said National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecaster Jim Cisco. But this is a storm that will affect a far wider area, so people all along the East have to be wary, Cisco said.
Coastal areas from Florida to Maine will feel some effects, mostly from the hurricane part, he said, and the other parts of the storm will reach inland from North Carolina northward.
Once the hurricane part of the storm hits, "it will get broader. It won't be as intense, but its effects will be spread over a very large area," the National Hurricane Center's chief hurricane specialist, James Franklin, said Thursday.
One of the more messy aspects of the expected storm is that it just won't leave. The worst of it should peak early Tuesday, but it will stretch into midweek, forecasters say. Weather may start clearing in the mid-Atlantic the day after Halloween and Nov. 2 in the Northeast, Cisco said.
"It's almost a weeklong, five-day, six-day event," Cisco said Thursday from NOAA's northern storm forecast center in College Park, Md. "It's going to be a widespread serious storm."

well, at least once Chicago gonna miss the extreme weather ...........................
you don't have to tell me i live on the East coast of Florida we have seen alot of climate changes this storm is a freak storm the weather people say that the full moon is going to affect the tides as of which will cause flooding . oh such joy love and light
Now, taking all of this into consideration...
The rain in California is dropping toxic corexit all over the place, poisoning everything. I can't help but be concerned that these storms will also have the potential to spread this poison here on the east coast. Its also been demonstrated that storms can be "led" by the strategic use of chem trails. This storm may not be an accident.
Talk about corexit Ikse, I live on the gulf coast on the west side of Florida and corexit has been shoring since the BP oil company had it it HUGE oil spill in the gulf of Mexico...I do not go swimming in the ocean any more, nor do I eat the seafood from here, nor do I go to the beach...sucks really to live in a state where you can swim in the ocean all year and sunbath on the beach, and not dare go in or near the ocean....I hear ya about the corexit, a lot of Floridians have gotten really ill since the spill...I have health fragilety on a good day, so I don't invite illness....
That is just awful... the cabal have so much to answer for. I can't wait until Gaia has been restored to purity and health and these times of chaos are behind us.
solutions to problems... not blown up, and after make the same building like before, so to be blown away again the next year...
..the first 2 and half minutes talks about hurricane proof building for the people to go in hurricane emergencies...
Whew, I just got the rest of my hurricane shutters installed, and my hurricane proof garage door and paid my homeowners insurance...in Florida we always expect the worse all year long anyhow...I have enough drygoods and water to last me for months....
dome shaped houses are already wind storm proof. if anything does ever happen to your home i would consider this for the next one.
This is the dome house that I would love to buy.....got about 5 million to spare, lol...This one was on the show Extreme Homes and it is totally awesome and totally hurricane proof...
i was thinking something a little more in tune with nature, looks like a pimple on the earth lol.
