From Ego to Essence

 I recently read an article in a magazine written by Barbara Marx Hubbard and the article was titled From Ego to Essence. She has written many books in which I have intentions to read and to gain more understanding and knowledge from her perception. This information is interwoven from her book titled Emergence.

“M y experience with many people now is that by practicing these steps we are able to embody our own essence, our true nature.”

 I would briefly like to speak about her perception of this and how I can resonate with it. She gives a very elegant understanding of the birthing process to Mother Earth and the evolution of humankind. She is tainted with love and wisdom by far. I can resonate with her because I too have felt this same feeling many times and have practiced many self many disciplines if you will. In her creative side which I can also relate she exhibits much attention to a visual perception as she speaks/writes and this works for me very well for me.

 “Emergence” offer us an evolutionary spiritual path designed especially for this phase change now occurring on Planet Earth.

It is my thesis that poetically speaking, “Mother Earth” is giving birth to a new human life form. She gave birth to bacteria, to single cells, to a whole biosphere, to animals, to humans, to Homo sapiens and Homo sapiens sapiens. Now, pressured by changing life conditions there is arising en masse, not a new religion or ethical philosophy, but, a new person, the cocreative human, the universal human, Homo universalis, Homo noeticus, Homo noeticus, Homo noosphericus and many other early names.

 This type has been developing for thousands of years. But now, we have hit a chaos window on Earth. Our whole planetary system is far from equilibrium. The system itself is seeking a higher more complex order, or structure. In that process there is being called forth within millions of us a higher consciousness, a greater sense of freedom, and above all a powerful heart’s desire to realize our full creative potential.

This universe human feels connected through the heart to the whole of life, inspired by the subjective impulse of evolution from within to be more, give more, love more, create more. We are expanding toward a more cosmic consciousness, a greater awareness of the connectedness of the whole system and the universal dimensions of reality onto which we are being born.

 I have been a futurist, an evolutionary educator and activist for many years, but it was not until 12 years ago that I discovered the Emergence Process, and it has made all the difference.

I had found in my work I had a tendency toward anxiety, I was compulsive, I could never finish and felt behind no matter how much I did. One day in 1999 I decided to STOP and dedicated 3 hours every morning for 6 to 9am to discover a new way forward for myself. I was guided toward a new form of meditation that literally shifted my life, which I share now as the Emergence Process.

 I had been receiving guidance from what seemed to be a higher self for many years, recording it in my daily journal. I would ask a question, develop a poised mind, and write insights that brought peace, love, joy, direction and wholeness into my life. But when I went out to DO the guidance, I noticed that I was doing it as a local, egoic or separated part of myself. This local self was inspired by the higher self, but not at one with it!

 So I created an Inner Sanctuary and placed my attention on the feeling of receiving higher guidance. Gradually I noticed that the higher self was “coming in” as a frequency of love into my heart. My local self was falling in love with this higher self that we are calling the Essential Self. In the Inner Sanctuary in my little living room the compulsion faded. The frequency of the Essential Self started to shift the field of consciousness within me. The local self relaxed, released its compulsions, becoming transparent to the higher self.

 Over a period, I recorded the clear stages of my own incarnation process in Emergence. My experience with many people now is that by practicing these steps we are able to embody our own essence, our true nature. We can guide our local egoic selves to experience “the bliss of union” of the human and the divine aspect of our being. The “I of identity” shifts from ego to essence. The Emergence Process unfolds as a developmental path toward the next stage of human evolution.

 In Emergence each stage in the process is described with key practices and journaling guidance.

 First comes Conception. This is when we have our first unitive experiences and realize that we are spiritual beings, more than a simple creature human. Then comes Gestation. Still in the womb of self-consciousness we find teachers, classes, books, and the practices that begin to stabilize the expanded awareness.

Then comes Birth of the universal human. This is a profound moment when realize that this higher self, however, we have experienced it, whether through masters, avatars, or our own inner voice, is actually true nature. We stop seeking this presence outside ourselves, and in a sacred ceremony we invite the Essential Self to come in the whole way. We enter Infancy “born” as a very young universal human, incarnating our own essential selves. Step One in the process is entering the Inner Sanctuary where we begin to realize our new identity as our Essential Self. We break out of the limits of our own egoic self and in innocence and humility, make room for something new.

 The next phase is Childhood. A new identity emerges out of a fusion of the Essential and local selves. The young universal Human appears within us. The Essential Self learns to express through its local self with others in the world. It might be called a “kindergarten of godlings”, as we put this purpose first, education our local selves, maturing the inner father and mother, learning to see the essence in others, loving the “other” as our own essential self and more.

 Then comes the phase called Youth. This phase is often experienced as a second puberty; no matter what age we are chronologically. As in biological youth we experience sexual arousal and the desire for a mate. So in our universal human youth, we are surprised by “vocational arousal.” The sexual drive to procreate expands into a “suprasexual” desire to cocreate. We cannot do it alone! We want to join not our genes to have a baby, but, our genius to birth our greater selves and our work in the world. The process of joining with others to cocreate generates a joy, a new kind of love affair, calling for new levels of unique creativity inherent in our essential selves.

 The process nurtures us into being new archetypes: the Feminine and Masculine Cocreator. In the Feminine Cocreator, especially after menopause, women discover that they are giving birth to their own creative self. The evolutionary impulse awakens. If you have seen her, you have seen the Creative Forces incarnating. She falls in love with the unknown future just as she does with the unknown child. She holds within her the seeds of the future human and humanity. When she says YES to her own unique vocation or calling, she becomes the “egg.” At 82 years old, as my “yes” continues to deepen, I am experiencing “Regenopause”, a pause in the life cycle. It’s true, the body is aging, but the spirit is rising. My vitality is increasing. My vocation is expanding.

 Many men are in “Andropause.” They are stepping beyond the structures of the patriarchal society that acutely built civilization for 5000 years, but can no longer evolve it. Like the feminine cocreator they are cultivating their own essential creativity and love in many kinds of partnerships for the good of the self and the larger world.
