LONDON (AFP) – Aliens may exist but mankind should avoid contact with them as the consequences could be devastating, British scientist Stephen Hawking warned Sunday.
"If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn't turn out well for the Native Americans," said the astrophysicist in a new television series, according to British media reports.
The programmes depict an imagined universe featuring alien life forms in huge spaceships on the hunt for resources after draining their own
planet dry.
"Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach," warned Hawking.
The doomsday scenario is suggested in the series "Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking" on the Discovery Channel, which began airing in the United States on Sunday.
On the probability of alien life existing, he says: "To my mathematical brain, the numbers alone make thinking about aliens perfectly rational.
"The real challenge is to work out what aliens might actually be like."
Glowing squid-like creatures, herds of herbivores that can hang onto a cliff face and bright yellow predators that kill their prey with
stinging tails are among the creatures that stalk the scientist's
fantastical cosmos.
Mankind has already made a number of attempts to contact extraterrestrial civilisations.
In 2008, American space agency NASA beamed the Beatles song "Across the Universe" into deep space to send a message of peace to any alien that happens to be in the region of Polaris -- also known as the North Star -- in 2439.
But the history of humanity's efforts to contact aliens stretches back some years.
The US probes Pioneer 10 and 11 were launched in 1972 and 1973 bearing plaques of a naked man
and woman and symbols seeking to convey the positions of the Earth and
the Sun.
Voyager 1 and 2, launched in 1977, each carry a gold-plated copper phonogram disk with recordings of sounds and images on Earth.
The responses to them are also interesting. Are people really ready? Is this another distraction tactic?

I don't agree that negative ETs have been in control of the planet since before the fall of Atlantis.
They have been trying to control it since long before Atlantis. There are a few good guys out there as well trying to help out but ultimately it's up to us.
The real battle is going on at the vibratory level and we are seeing edited delayed reruns on our 3rd dimensional screens.

Tite: 'Hawkins gets lost in space over alien life'
He ruefully remarked on his recent warnings about alien life, that he has been called an alien himself, which he assures is not so...:)...
He was said to be teasing and joking with a receptive audience about the dangers of aliens and that the universe is teeming with alien life but added to '(!)laughter', 'intelligent life less so..' aliens want to compete with us rather than play with us, he warned. 'And all that leaves for me is to beam myself up to my mothership'....:)..:)...:).. With thoughts about the headlines he quipped: 'I should not have said that'!!
My thoughts on this are that he has a right to think and say what he wants... I cannot estimate how many people will for the first time tackle in their minds anything to do with alien life, possible existence and what they may be like.
All works out as part of the Big Plan.
A great idea to ease people, who like to believe what's being told them by people who 'know' ...away from main stream media opinion making, where this topic is rarely mentioned, still publicly ridiculed and the whole alien thing basically negated. So mainstream, nobody dares to speak about it and now through the media it has been thrown out there as a discussion point. Great!
Many people are cleverer and think deeper than we give them credit for, they just dare not tell anyone their views..or express them or dare to discuss this as it might cost them a lot to do so...
I am convinced that negative, manipulative, controlling and pursuing darkness (..their own agenda here on earth) aliens are already here and working in some sort of partnership with the dark Cabal and our /especially the US government.. ...possibly he knows this too and more... could he be warning in case we have the US Gov. planned false ET introduction where they will show us the bad ones who look and behave like good ones ready for the final deception???...who will come first? ....it is going to be our test and how well we know our hearts...manipulation will go into overdrive......Chemtrails are already madly on the increase here over London, everyday it is thick in our skies...
There is no need to flatten him or speak bad about him, he is doing his bit, it all will fit together and he will have played a part.
Warning about negative aliens is a good and wise message to all of us, because they already influence our lives, politics, environment, media, religions everyday for the worst....sucking us and this planet dry with us on it is an ongoing agenda, if they could just get away with it....
This might never have crossed the minds of most....what a crazy and farfetched thought........:)..?..!!....:).. it is almost impossible to talk to anyone about this side of the life/conspiracy we have allowed them to perpetuate... yes beware of negative aliens and what they are planning for humanity and this world...
