How does numerology work? I don't get it.

Dear brothers and sisters,

I have all my life been very skeptic to numerology of a simple reason:

Numbers and letters are manmade and therefore I can't see how it can be real. As most spiritual teachers say: It's all an illusion.

Can anyone tell me?
