IMPECCABLE WITH YOUR WORD

8110580258?profile=original

The first and most profound of don Miguel’s Four Agreements is Be Impeccable with Your Word. While this seems fairly straightforward it takes on many subtle and profound aspects as you begin to practice. Very simply to be impeccable with your Word is to use your Word in the direction of love and truth. It’s not as simple as it sounds.

How we apply this agreement in practice can be complicated. For instance, suppose we have a good friend and are friends with their spouse as well. We’ve found out that the spouse is cheating on our friend. It is in the direction of truth to tell our friend that their partner is cheating on them. On the other hand delivering the message and facts is not very kind and loving and will hurt their feelings. It also might not be considered very respectful to inject our nose into the business of other people’s relationship. In these critical situations being impeccable with your word can appear to go either way.

It is also possible that a person can bend the meaning of Being Impeccable in order to fit their agenda.

I won’t try to split hairs and explain how to apply the principle of Be Impeccable with Your Word to every situation in this one article. Different situations have their own nuances to be aware of that can’t be addressed in one page.

What does it mean to be Impeccable with your Word?

I want to point out something more important about impeccability to be aware of that is often overlooked. The expression of your Word is much more than just the expression of your words.

Your word (small case) has to do with the things you say. They make up sentences, phrases that you speak and write. They come out as opinions, or comments, thoughts in your head, or could even make it into policy in some situations. On the other hand your Word is much more.

Your Word (upper case) has to do with the power you have to create through every kind of expression you make. You create through multiple types of expression including emotions, attitude, actions, what you refrain from, and what you express your faith in.

You can create how you feel emotionally by generating emotions, and then you feel them. You can create dynamics of respect in relationship by being silent and listening attentively. You can create a different experience for your self and others by refraining from an emotional reaction. You create an income for your self by how well you express caring in the activity of your work. You create a different self image of your self by putting the power of your faith in a thought you have about your self. This can happen in a very subtle and almost passive way of just accepting what you think about your self as true.

You express in a multitude of ways through out the day and being impeccable with your Word applies to all of them.

Silence can be Impeccable

Silence is an expression. And sometimes silence and refrain says a lot more than words can. Your actions are a part of how you create. To hit someone doesn’t fall into the category of expressing your self in the direction of love and truth. To greet someone with a kiss on the cheek is an expression that says more than a thousand words can.

Your Fears go against your Self

To live with existing fears in your mind doesn’t fall into the category of being impeccable. Maintaining fears of public speaking, asking someone out on a date, or a fear of failing is not in the direction of love for your self. Keeping your self in fear is an ongoing expression in your own mind that causes you to hold back in your actions of love for your self and others. Fear is at the heart of NOT being impeccable.

To Be Impeccable with Your Word is not as simple as it sounds. When you explore the meaning of this agreement your understanding will expand. You will begin to pay attention to the smaller moments of the day. Thoughts that used to go unnoticed or passing comments that seemed to be no big deal before become significant. As you become aware of the subtle expressions of the day this agreement becomes more challenging than one originally thought.

To really master being impeccable will require that you heighten your awareness not just to the words you say, but also to the emotions you express, your attitude, your actions, and where you express the power of your belief. You will need to develop a discipline of mindfulness to be impeccable in these expressions through out the day.

To Be Impeccable with Your Word is an art requiring constant vigilance. It is not something that you can decide to do one day and master by the end of the week. The mastery of any art, like music, painting, or sculpture, requires practice. To master the way you express your emotions, actions, thoughts, beliefs, will take practice just like any other art. In the beginning it will be challenging to just learn the basic skills.

A beginning painter will likely throw out his first drawing. He will also throw out many other early works. However those efforts are not wasted. As he pays attention to the details of his brush strokes he learns skills with every attempt. It takes time to master the various skills of mixing colors, brush strokes, choosing themes, and mastering light and shadows. With each painting he finishes, whether he keeps it or throws it away, he has improved himself as an artist.

You too will let go of what you created in your life years ago, and work on bigger and better creations as you develop. Each day is an opportunity to create a new piece of art with your life. Last years art is already far behind you. Learn, grow, and develop your skills through your creations, but don’t let them define you as an artist.

When you apply the practice of doing your best to be impeccable you discover that it has incredible rewards. To express your self in the direction of truth and love allows you to create your life as a masterpiece of beauty.

To master being impeccable with your word will take many moments of practice. You will likely throw away many of your attempts as being clumsy and not what you want. But that is okay. For with each action and attempt, you improve as the artist of your life.

Be careful not to believe the judgments that are likely to come from that inner judge. Make a commitment to do your best everyday and it will help you avoid self judgments as you practice and improve. Remember that in the midst of all these expressions that the real art you are working on is your self and you are worth taking time for. ~ Gary van Warmerdam ~ Toltec Spirit / Based on the four agreements

What is the Mitote?

Posted by Gary on May 21st, 2008

"The Mitote (me-toe-tay) referred to in The Four Agreements by don Miguel Ruiz is a lot like blogs on the internet. People are pouring out the thoughts in their head and filling virtual cyberspace with opinions, ideas, rants, and their personal knowledge. It is an overwhelming volume of words that other people read, form opinions about and then write words about them in their blogs. Then more people read those opinions about opinions and write their opinion. Very seldom do any of these add any real value to one’s life. Even when good writing has a chance to have an impact, the reader isn’t likely to hold their attention and awareness with it long enough to have a real impact. Their undisciplined short attention is overwhelmed against the onslaught of more information and opinions to surf.

In the same way the mitote in the mind is like those layers of opinions. It is the cacophony of voices that make up the incessant thinking in your mind. The world of your imagination is filled with opinions, information, description, rants, judgments, and victimizations.

It has developed such a momentum that when you will your self to be still long enough and step back from them, you can’t help but notice them. You will likely be surprised at how loud those voices are. And usually right after that moment of awareness where you detach from the mitote and observe it, you form an opinion, or make a statement about what you observe.

And in that moment of forming an opinion or making a descriptive statement about the mitote, you have just lost your attention to the cacophony and contributed another layer."

Your happiness is directly related to your ability to control your attention and the interpretations in your mind. Self Mastery requires practical actions. If you want a different result, you must take a different action. If it doesn't work, take a new action until you get your result.

"Consider the process of gaining awareness and skills involved in swimming.  Swimming is a complex activity that we make simple with practice.   You don’t learn to do that all at once, but rather by beginning with small fundamental steps like holding your breath and then floating. When practicing these skills it doesn’t appear that you are learning to swim. However you are learning very important skills necessary for swimming.

Just by floating you are learning to focus your attention, calm your fears, and relax your body.  When floating it appears you are not doing much.  But it is in the not doing that you are making progress.  You are learning how not to lose your attention, panic, flail, waste energy, and gulp water.   These not doings are a big steps towards mastering swimming.

Learning to swim is a skill that you practiced in the safe shallow end and then worked you way up to rivers and oceans.  As you worked your way up to more challenging environments you also developed awareness of your skills as a swimmer, and of the water.  You learned to read the currents, depth, ocean waves, and things like rip tides. You also learned to make discerning choices based on your physical condition and the affects of water temperature of fatigue.  As you gain awareness of your skills as a swimmer, and the water conditions, you can make wise choices and enjoy playing in a world of water.

Learning to make your way through the world of beliefs and emotions is similar.  You can have a lot more enjoyment in the world of emotions when you develop your skills, awareness of your skills, and awareness of the environment around you. In the beginning it may be a matter of learning not to drown in fears, anger, or jealousy.  As you become more skilled you will spend more time in the emotions of love, gratitude, and respect.

You can not learn to swim from a book or even 100 books.  By the same token no amount of intellectual knowledge will translate to the skills necessary to change your perceptions, core beliefs, emotional reactions, and sabotaging behaviors. The only way to learn is to practice skills that allow you to make those changes.  This includes awareness of your own beliefs, emotions, and point of view.

Most people have had no training in changing their assumptions, expectations, point of view or beliefs.   When they do start paying attention they often react to what they discover with judgment or victimization instead of making clear assessments and effective changes. "

  • in my experience i found that self discipline may become a routine (in the form of a habit) but there is a significance difference between this two self discipline has a purpose, however the routine in a mechanical - meaning there is no awareness in that.

    Thank you Hellen ;)

The Toltec Teachings contain incredibly profound tools that have had a deep impact on my Life. Of course 'The Four Agreements' remain a meaningful addition to the path. For me 'Don't take anything personally' contains the key to Spiritual Freedom. I've had the chance to meet & work with some of Castaneda's inner circle... also Don Miguel Ruiz & his son. Truly Life affirming experiences. ~InLight555

    The Four Agreements

    1. Be Impeccable with your Word: Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the Word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your Word in the direction of truth and love.

    2. Don’t Take Anything Personally: Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

    3. Don’t Make Assumptions: Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

    4. Always Do Your Best: Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.

We either make ourselves miserable, or we make ourselves strong. The amount of work is the same.~Carlos Castaneda

    • why the most logical and simple rules/principals are the most difficult to achieve ... ;) but at the core of it so profound - kind of like being "naked' in front of yourself ;)

  • Self-importance is our greatest enemy. Think about it--what weakens us is feeling offended by the deeds and misdeeds of our fellow men. Our self-importance requires that we spend most of our lives offended by someone. Without self-importance we are invulnerable. Self-importance is not something simple and naive. On the one hand, it is the core of everything that is good in us, and on the other hand, the core of everything that is rotten. To get rid of the self-importance that is rotten requires a masterpiece of strategy. In order to follow the path of knowledge one has to be very imaginative. In the path of knowledge nothing is as clear as we'd like it to be. ~Carlos Castaneda~

  • and a little self-restrain ...  ;)

  • I really dig your postings.

    • Thanks Malcolm,

if I could say it any better in my words - I would, but I am terrible in essay … ;)

  • And ye shall speak the truth.

And the truth shall set you free.

    • The Word was with itself?  Just messing, I'll take it that word combined with existing God, and became a new God.

    • any thing can be a good tool in life, but taking too far it will become its own trap.
