The work of love is a strange thing.
It`s explanation is leading to strange results too.
Basic sources in our culture are 1 Cor 13 and Platon`s Symposion.
I will not speak here simply on love, but intend to show different love understandings and it`s effects - some are meaningless, many frightening.
a. Love as offering
Results: devotion of single ones, but also demands and reglementations, especially pointing to women, slaves, mass people
b. Love as struggle
Results: restlessness and everytime feeling of danger; fear of losing something ore someone
c. Love as burning (soul fire)
Results: compulsive deeds like submission to something or someone, self hate, even murderer because of love
d. Love as duty
Results: anger, desperation, coldness while wishing a love status
e. Love as joy
Results: easygoing, tolerance
f. Love as obsession
Results: justification of violence and even war
g. Love as moral standart
Results: mercilessness, double standarts, coldness
h. Love as submission
Results: low self esteem, receiving of insults, fear of getting perceived as mature person
i. Love as obedience
Results: openness to getting exploited, gruelty to others, pushing away own conscienceness, ability of getting misused in different directions
Of course this is not the end of possible explanations.
But one thing seems clear.
There are many different abilities of explaining and reasoning love, depending on how somebody is understanding love, and in some cases even killing and cruelty is considered coming from the power of love. Literature for instance is full of it.
Mostly we live with a mix of many different understandings.
From what I understand, not only Christ and Paul considered killing and cruelty of related love interpretations a taboo - it is not the intention of God.
Anyway, on the other hand the whole complex is showing love as main force moving humans in all circumstances.
Erich Fromm calls love not as a matter of course, but an art, see his book here:
