On the first few days of March 2013, massive methane releases occurred off the coast of Los Angeles in Santa Monica Bay and in the Kingston area of Jamaica. In both cases, a strong stench was released. In Jamaica, the massive release caused panic and sickened some islanders to the point of requiring hospitalization. The release of methane is often the result of tectonic plate movement.
