Prostitution (coming from latin pro + statuere = to expose) is mostly considered as related to sexuality. In my view there is an extended look necessary.
Exposing and mercantile use of sex has a very long history. There is no need of any head - shaking: prostitution in various kinds is part of human behaviour. For further info see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostitution.
I remember the ongoing problems accepting prostitution and the models of explaining it by structures of exploitation and affinities to violence and disrespect. And I also have in mind many double standart arguments modern societies use against prostitution. We will not solve the problems here. Maybe we can try to find deeper understandings thus extending the meaning of prostitution.
An extended consideration would be mental and even spiritual prostitution:
# the military complex is always luring intelligent and devoted people of excellency exposing their knowledge for an evil and destructing machinery;
# companies including spiritual movements lure highly skilled people using their gifts for the sake of money, honour and power;
# it starts in schools luring students into mental prostitution calling it contest and competition being necessary in our western societies;
# even churches lure people into spiritual prostitution thus saving exclusive thinking calling it necessary self profile.
Mental and spiritual prostitution is, in other words, a gentle and kind way of making exploitation acceptable to people. In 19th century even kids worked 16 hours a day and died early. This kind of predator capitalism has changed into something like a wolf in sheep's clothing, and people swallow it easily.
Like people love to fuck around, they also love many mind fuck games, illusions and temptations thus keeping mental prostitution always going...

I recall an episode of "The Simpsons" a few years back where Bart Simpson was given "godlike" power. He was always right like that kid in the old twilight zone episode who turned his family into stalks of corn. Anyway, Bart re-named America "Bonerland". It fits. :)

Or we can try and make it as simple to understand for everyone, because at the root of this thinking, it is a very simple principle.
A) an individual uses their time and energy to do a task for someone or something = 1 unit
B) Someone gives me something for my time and energy = 1 unit
C) Someone has created a tool called money to extract that time and labor for free = 1 unit
add example A and example B and we have 1 unit, even when example B pays example A back, we are still left with 1 unit total, thus we now have to rely on example C to keep supplying us with so called money, giving the corrupted example C power over us.
Point being, we are not getting ahead at all by example B having to pay back example A, we are only empowering example C and feeding the artificial debt and money systems in all its manifestations.
However, to circumvent this control over our human interactions of trade, example A must not expect anything from example B, thus example B now has 1 unit and the artificial cycle of artificial debt is neutralized.
Now, example A is now reliant on many others to make the same kind of choice, then another example B might be a farmer and this farmer will not be taking anything in return for his farming time and energy and will share his food freely with all.
Now maybe we can see why example C is so active in taking as much money from people as they can, so they cannot keep enough of any real goods, like food, etc. because they have to sell those things in order to acquire the money to pay the bills that are artificially created by example C that created this nightmare control system.
It is this artificial construct of example C that prevents people from sharing freely, though it is just an idea and this idea will change in the minds of humanity when their consciousness expands.
this system, equivalent to paying it forward, over a relatively short time span will yield massive abundance for all.
Though as we can see, much resistance is put forth by those that are at the top of this predatory system of example C and those below on this pyramid ( aka life grinder ) are to fearful of change, even if it is to set them free.

...and, it is the deep reason of double standarts, both individual and public, which leads to pathological dichotomy in our lives - we act different publicly than privatly.
And not seldom spirituality serves as agent of such sickness by contributing private comfort - the status quo is saved, and the sick game is going to continue.
