Not sure if you're still following this but there is a book that is a very good guide for this: http://www.belzebuub.com/belzebuubs-printed-books/a-course-in-astra...
I don't think you have to lie in any particular direction to astral project... In the world there tends to be a lot information and not everything is correct... so to know what's true is a matter of personal exploration. I am still learning this but I have been able to "split" (the astral body) while lying with my head to the north east. I had never had such experiences before but with that book I've learned to do it. The book explains in an exremely simple way and is not full of meaningless information; it is straight to the point and very practical.
The way to astral project is simple: relax and concentrate your mind. There are different techniques though but it all involves concentrating the mind towards ONE thing. And of course relaxing. So what one does first is to relax the body deeply... Lie down and relax for a while, lie completely still... Make sure the muscles in the body relax... The body should be falling asleep so relaxation is important... Then one starts to concentrate the mind towards one thing. For example: concentrating on the heart beat, visualisation, pronouncing a mantra mentally, etc. The concentration upon that ONE thing is what is important. It seems to have benefits trying to astral project in the morning after some sleep. But still improving the skill to relax the body and to concentrate the mind is important to be able to succeed as often as possible. So even if it has benefits trying to project in the morning, practice is important.
If you're interested, I recommend you read the book. Either buy it or download it as it will be released for free download in the future.

In fact, it is interesting to note that your head needs to be facing north and your feet south. Back when my astral travel experiences were in full swing, I slept in a different room and I slept with my head facing northwest and my feet facing southeast (I live on a diagonal street). Nowadays I sleep with my head and feet in the inverse directions.
I would really love to do astral projection again, especially when I now know of the Galactic Federation of Light and can contact them for information and advice.
Love is with you always.
