Obama Administration Pushes Ahead with $6 Billion Plutonium Lab in New Mexico

Despite lacking what critics say is a clear purpose or mission, the Department of Energy is planning to invest $6 billion in building a new plutonium facility at the nation’s leading scientific lab.

Los Alamos National Laboratory wants to have a “Chemistry and Metallurgy Research Replacement” (CMRR) Nuclear Facility, which has been on the books since 1999. Back when it was first proposed, the cost was estimated to be $375 million. Now, the price tag is anywhere from $4.5 billion to $6.5 billion, according to the Los Alamos Study Group, a local watchdog organization.

The study group has filed two lawsuits against the government to try to stop the project from being completed.

When it was originally proposed, the new facility was going to handle only small samples of plutonium, with perhaps a total of 900 grams on hand. Today, the Energy Department is talking about having the CMRR store up to six metric tons of plutonium—enough to rebuild the entire U.S. arsenal of nuclear warheads. The stated purpose of the facility is “to conduct experimental and industrial processes involving large quantities of plutonium, primarily in support of nuclear warhead core (‘pit’) manufacturing.”

Opponents of the project cite various safety problems at Los Alamos to make their point about killing the CMRR. Recently, it was reported that the lab had repeatedly missed deadlines to fix nuclear safety issues that could lead to accidental chain reactions.

  • I dont see any doomers in this website. I think that term refers to people who actually believe that the world is going to end in some kind of Apocalypse Now.. and gloomers..whats that? ..

I see good souls in here doing the best they can to make others feel better by encouraging them and not putting each other down.. I see people doing the best they can to share Love and hopefull help other people to feel better about themselves..

I dont see anything gloomy in that at all.. its nice to connect with people who want to know that you are Loved unconditionally.. and so even when a person who embodies unconditional Love recieves a reply that is negitive, then the Love for the other is amplified even moreso because I guess that is why we are all here.. to Love one another.. without any conditions... and to understand each other and to accept one another.

I think there is no real thoughts of doom and gloom in someone who is awake and aware of the fact that there is no separation.. when that dawns on a person, then it is easy to see the world through the eyes of Love and not through its opposite.

I think when we all realise that we have a chakra system of spinning vortex's of energy in us, that our DNA is currently changing, that we are multi dimensional beings and that we live in a holographic Universe, that we are all telepathic and have the ability to heal ourselves through our Love for one another rather than believe in an illusion that we are separate because of our apparent differences, that we are Christ Vibration.. then we will have looked deeper..

there is no doom and gloom scenario whatsoever with those who are genuinely giving of their hearts.. it appears to be percieved to be that way because the ones who see it this way dont look any deeper.

If they looked farther within and deeper into their hearts and minds and souls.. the perspective opens up more for them... and that.. is in my opinion, because when words like ''in my opinion, as I see it, it appears to be'' and so forth are added into a response, it shows respect to any reader becase it does not force the viewpoint.. it allows for the other to share their opinion aswell and it displays a listening ear without being the Master and Commander.

    • Luke,

If you don't see any doomers, you might want to read a few of the negative and tantrum comments on this thread from supposedly enlightened people.

      • Richard - I see some people disaggreeing but thats about it.. the term doom and gloom appears to be apocolyptic and implies the end of the world etc.. its sounds like ''war of the worlds'' .. and we are all only people on the other end of computers, these are only words in a website.. in daily life outside of the site I am sure that all parties are not in any way doomers as you say, or even in the site.. its just souls with different views and getting into disaggreements but deep down, no matter how caustic the fighting appears, they Love each other.. or at least unconditional Love must surely be involved.. but thats the thing about being clued in enough to know that he one you are at loggerheads with is really your brother or your sister.... you can Love people but you can also stand your ground.. and defend yourself.. thats why people who stand up for what they believe in with unconditional Love and for the depth of Love for all are refered to as LightWarriors.. because it is not all flowers and rainbows .. sometimes it means saying ''NO'' in a firm but compassionate way..
So, I dont see it as doomer or anything like that.. its not that pleasent to observe when you observe your brothers and sisters fighting from time to time but I guess the art of allowing must be excercised here.. and I wont be dragged into anything.. I just made an observation from my perspective - as I see it - in my opinion - as it appears to be to me.. you may see it your way and that is fine - I dont see it the same way, thats all.
I accept your opinion on it.. but I have my own opinion which should also be respected whether its aggreed upon or not.. and that is the only thing I wish to add - I made my main point in my previous comment.

        • Luke,

I've made one overtly negative comment to you in response to your claim that I'm afraid and don't know what love is, which I didn't appreciate. And if I had to do it over again, I'd tone it down without avoiding the concepts conveyed.

There are end timers who've made it explicitly clear that in their view our civilization isn't viable and catastrophic collapse is imminent. Doomer is a very apt description. There's no other way that a sane rational person would interpret their words. When they've avoided ambiguity and obfuscation as strenuously as they have.

They've also gone out of their way to be intentionally demeaning, insulting and inflammatory. It's disgraceful and hypocritical coming from people claiming to be more evolved and enlightened than those who they're putting down. They actually end up looking very small and mean spirited in the process. And it's deeply ingrained habit with some of the more aggressive ones.

It's there for all to see. There's no way that an attentive reader of any significant intellect could miss it.

And they show up on threads filled with hope and realism time and again, where people who aren't bothering anyone are behaving themselves properly and conducting a normal, pleasant conversation, to break site rules in an effort to get them shut down so that they don't compete with their end times doom cult plans. While the thread wreckers congratulate and attempt to out do each other in how obnoxious they can be, it's disgusting.

  • Canada is the 2nd biggest uranium supplier in the world, sure. And I don't agree with using it to build weapons, especially nuclear weapons. But it's a big export for Canada. And it's not just used for weapons. And in terms of international relations, if Canada just decided to not sell anymore uranium to anyone...it would cause a ruckus. It wouldn't help our economy either. It's not the most ideal situation, but, until the system changes, it is how it is.

    • Thorium reactors have been viable for almost as long as uranium and plutonium reactors. It's safe, clean, dependable, non weaponizable and uses the waste from uranium and plutonium plants as part of it's fuel cycle, consuming and neutralizing it's toxicity. Which is why it was suppressed and left under developed. To insure a robust weapons industry.

It doesn't produce electricity as affordably as uranium and plutonium plants. But it has had only a small fraction of the R&D money spent on it that they have. And I'm sure that the costs will come down as it's developed.

    • Yea but..there is still the issue of what to do with it. And for many years now, they have decided the best way to do away with it, is to dump it in the ocean, or bury it underground. That....long term...is not sustainable, if we want a healthy planet. If it's true that they developed a new method to dispose of the waste, without burying it or dumping it...well that's good, another step forward, more reason to be optimistic.

    • I have nuclear clearances and have legally handled and transported nuclear and other hazardous material numerous times without a problem. As long as you know what you're doing and are careful, it's very safe.

  • Is it this Mayor, Greg..??

  • I know some people can't help being obese and I sympathise, but when capitalism creates an environment in which steaks are too big to place on a plate..and everything is "kingsize" this and "kingsize" that...you have to question the life philosophies behind it....and frankly, it comes down to greed and excess....

So we have a world in which greed is encouraged, while poverty is also tolerated....

Madness and just goes to show how such a state is precarious...IT IS FALLING DOWN...

Look at finance...the bubble has burst......
