Hollywood tries to give us messages on how there is a shadow government all the time. The Matrix is the best movie to do this besides the movie Network that was directed in the 1970's.
basically people living in the matrix are living in a false reality created by the government and corporations, they're living in this matrix because they're brainwashed into seeing this false reality, and with it comes a false logic and way of thinking. most people are too weak and are too afraid to wake up from this matrix, and I think alot of people who break free from the matrix end up working for the illuminati because they tried to break others free from the matrix but in most cases the brainwashing is too powerful.
in the matrix they also say that "humans are growing out of control, and they destroy all the surrounding resources then move to another location only to repeat this process. there is another organism that follows this process: a Virus. Humans are a Virus and we are the cure"
