"Man is becoming a willing slave. He no longer needs chains. He begins to grow fond of his slavery, to be proud of it. And this is the most terrible thing that can happen to a man". [Gurdjieff quoted by Ouspensky]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The main reason why it's so terrible is that man does not know he is a slave, nor to what he is a slave to. It breaks my heart to really see the situation of 3D when so many "Billions" of helpless and lost people die daily like dogs.
So "never felt like a slave" is no proof that one is not a slave. Ignorance can be a kind of bliss. However, we all have to work for someone in order to earn the money to buy the things we need to "keep body and soul together".
Gurdjieff may not have meant this kind of slavery (he was a successful business man --- when not collecting the substantial fees from his students) but a kind of spiritual and moral slavery to human weaknesses. But that is another matter.
The fact is that, if we have to sell the time of our life just to stay alive, i.e. to pay for food, clothing and shelter, that is a modern kind of slavery. The only difference between that and traditional slavery is that we are free --- in theory --- to choose our master or change him if we do not like the work conditions he provides.
Planet earth has been under the dominance of a minority claiming ownership over it for the past ten thousand years and using the majority as their slaves. This need not continue, but it will, unless we wake up and face up to our true condition.
Read In Praise of Idleness for a view that might serve as a wake up call. (Thanks, Commander).
PS.
Only one response to this thread in nearly two months? What does that say about the kind of awareness through which people see the world?
We can be liberated if we choose to see the truth and stay true to who we are....
Yes, we are probably slaves to one thing or another, but I've never felt like a slave.... I have felt that it's an honor to be here.... now..... on planet Earth at such a sacred time in the Universe.... :)
