Peru to plant 2 million hectares of trees to restore Amazon forest

Puerto Inca (Huanuco region), Nov. 11. President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski said gaps need to be bridged across the country, and announced Peru will plant 2 million hectares of trees to restore Amazon forest. "We want to bridge gaps between valleys in Peru, between workers and businessmen, between people and leaders; we have to work together," the statesman said during the opening of Pachitea Bridge linking Puerto Sungaro and Puerto Inca districts in Huanuco region. Joined by Puerto Inca Mayor Daisy Heidinger Zevallos, Kuczynski said he will respond to her request for drinking water and sewage systems in favor of the population, who lack these resources even though they reside near a river. He went on to add his administration will coordinate the promotion of regional crops such as cocoa and coffee, as well as cattle —which offers many possibilities— and deforestation, "as we need forests to breathe, and because glaciers are melting." "We have to bring rain and we need forests to do so. We are going to plant 2 million hectares of trees in the highlands; we are going to restore 2 million hectares of Amazon forest," he pointed out. Pachitea bridge was built by Servicios Industriales de la Marina (Sima) in Callao and brought to Puerto Inca in separate parts. Its construction will benefit 9,000 locals and will help bring people and cargo back and forth between the said town and other parts of the country. The Peruvian leader headed to Huanuco region to take part in a series of activities accompanied by Peru’s First Vice-President Martin Vizcarra.
