This lesson is Part 2 of a Three-Part Series. The previous lesson concerned the planets, personal points, and the aspects or angles that involved these named points. Now we go on to the signs that some of these named points and planets are placed in, along with their rulerships below the signs.
Below is a listing of planetary and luminary rulerships, detriments, exaltaions, and falls. When a planet or luminary (Sun / Moon) is placed in its sign of rulership, the planet or luminary is in the sign that is strongly correlated with attributes that define the planet or luminary. Rulerships are thus significant in interpreting a horoscope since they take priority over and highlight areas of the zodiac that define the individual or their impact on others in this lifetime. In addition to rulerships of planets and luminaries, there are detriments, exaltations, and falls. Exaltations add a positive and unique aspect to the planet or luminary that differs from rulership definitions in the sense of purpose or role of the planet or luminary. This is opposed to rulership sign placement in the sense that rulership signs have all aspects reflective with the planet or luminary.  Detriments and falls are not "negative" placements; they are merely placements that prevent the planet or luminary from fully expressing their most prominent and defining characteristics in some way (but these detriment and fall placements may also allow certain positive aspects or characteristics of the planet or luminary to be expressed in some profound and very positive way. I have noticed that this action may be due to some sort of inner psychological balance indirectly done by the individual to possibly make up for and balance the inhibition of the placement in a sign of detriment or fall. Hence, these (-) placements are also significant, as these also represent important attributes of what defines the individual and their impact on others in this lifetime).  

Please remember the importance of an accurate time of birth. Without an accurate time of birth, the use of the 12 houses (and the Ascendant, Midheaven, Part of Fortune, and Vertex) are speculative and probably useless for purposes of astrological interpretation. Below are the 12 houses of the zodiac. Note that the planets/luminaries and their sign of rulership are assigned with the house. The zodiac sign gives an overall "feel" for what the house represents. Thus, a planet or luminary placed in it's "natural" house (reflective of its ruling sign) is significant for interpreting an individual's horoscope. This is because the planet or luminary is in the house that it best opperates in, and is thus similar to rulerships due to the combined presence of similar influence and similar attributes.  

Now we go on to individual horoscope interpretation. We covered the aspects of the planets/personal points in Part 1 of this lesson series with Albert Einstein and Janis Joplin. We now will add the important highlights of rulerships, detriments, exaltations, falls, and ruling house placement with this Part 2 and add the aspects from Part 1 as we go along...

Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein has no ruling planets or luminaries, but he has Saturn in the 10th House and Jupiter in the 9th House. His exaltations (+), detriments (-), and falls (-) are shown below; the houses of significance by virtue of placement of these planets are also listed below.

Now let's add the aspects from Part 1 to our sign and house definitions. The interpretation that combines all of these descriptions is displayed under the horoscope below.

Janis Joplin

We will apply the same technique now with Janis Joplin. Janis Joplin has a ruling Moon in Cancer AND an exalted Jupiter in Cancer in the 5th House. This is significant since the 5th House rules entertainment and activities with young people, and this was the direction Janis sought to enter in younger years (and achieve much success with). And yes, the placement of Neptune in the 8th House was a deadly warning for avoiding exposure to drugs or chemicals, be it heroin scored in L.A. or petroleum by-products in Port Arthur, Texas.

NEXT WEEK: final Part 3 will look at transits to the horoscope. We will look at important events of the lives of Albert Einstein and Janis Joplin and how transiting planets and luminaries impacted and had an effect on the lives of these two individuals.
