There are two formulas for the Part of Fortune. If you were born with the Sun above the horizon, the calculation is:
Ascendant + Moon - Sun
If you were born with the Sun below the horizon, the calculation is this:
Ascendant + Sun - Moon
To determine the number used for calculation, the Ascendant and the luminaries have their numbers derived from the placement on the 360 degree dial:
Hence, 1 degree Aries = 1; 2 degrees Taurus = 32; 3 degrees Pisces = 333; 4 degrees Capricorn = 274; etc.
Let's calculate Vladimir Putin's Part of Fortune:
Ascendant (213.17) + Moon (62.9) - Sun (193.92) = 82.15 = 22 degrees Gemini 9 minutes. Here's what it looks like in the horoscope (clue: look for the cross in the 8th House):
Here are definitions and glossaries of the Part of Fortune in the zodiac signs and natal houses:
Part Of Fortune And Placement In Natal Horoscope Charts For Analysis: Betty Ford, Henry Kissinger, Phil Spector, and Jimmy Hoffa
Betty Ford is the founder of one of the largest treatment centers for drug addiction. Her horoscope (below) reveals the Part of Fortune in Conjunction with Neptune (which rules drugs, hospitals, services) and both are placed in the 11th House (which rules associations, friends, and aspirations). This Conjunction defines an aspiration and talent for creation of and involvement with hospitals or health care centers involved with drugs and services. The Sesquiquadrate with Pallas in the 4th House ("science and entertainment at the home") emphasizes scientific approaches while making one "feel at home" and the Quincunx with Venus in the 6th House ("relationships") indicates the need for "friendship" as a part of the "health regimen."
The horoscope of Henry Kissinger (below) has a massive Conjunction of Jupiter, the Vertex, and the Part of Fortune in the 5th House. Regardless of how one feels about Kissinger, Kissinger was a psychologist and this Conjunction strongly favors him for talent with 5th House speculation in areas of a Scorpio nature, such as espionage, state secrets, and hidden areas of life (i.e. the occult; crimes of a secretive nature). The Sesquiquadrate of this cluster with Mars in the 1st House may provide additional success involving defending his actions (as horrific some of them are); Winston Churchill also had Mars in the 1st and was good at defending himself when cornered.
Phil Spector (below) has Mercury Conjunction the Part of Fortune in the 7th House. This defines talent in communications and/or art, and this art talent is emphasized with the Part of Fortune/Mercury Conjunction forming a Semi-Square with Venus in the 8th House. The Quincunx with Chiron ("advanced technology") and Sesquiquadrate with Pallas ("science and entertainment") adds a technology boost with the Mercury/Part of Fortune Conjunction. Spector learned about recording music at a young age, and was the inventor of a recording concept called "the wall of sound." The lush and wailing wall of sound can be heard on songs such as "Imagine" by John Lennon, "The Long And Winding Road" by Paul McCartney, and "I've Got You Babe" by Sonny & Cher. He has also been accused of stealing money from artists and shooting guns in recording studios when he couldn't have his way. He is currently serving time for shooting a female friend in his home.
Jimmy Hoffa (below) was the founder of the Teamsters Union, a well-known union of truck drivers responsible for transportation of goods throughout the United States. He was loved by the U.S. trucking community, but he was highly disliked by many members of the U.S. government. This is because he raised costs for important corporations via the founding of the Teamsters and had strong connections with organized crime. He was particularly very disliked by Robert Kennedy.
The Conjunction of the Part of Fortune with the Moon and Saturn defines talent with connections with "the government" (Saturn) and with "the public" (the Moon). However, there is a Square of this cluster with the Sun, Mercury, Ascendant, and the Black Moon. This defines much verbal and media conflict between Hoffa and the public and government (as one would expect with union activity), and potential for conflict with seedy or criminal elements (the Black Moon). The placement of Mars ("cars; trucks") in Capricorn ("Business") and in the 11th House ("associations") may define the Teamsters Union; the Trine between Mars and the Part of Fortune cluster may define the great admiration the Teamsters Union had for Hoffa.
