When are Ariel and Caliban set free?
When Prospero itself became free and trew away all magic and rage.
THE TEMPEST is Shakespeare`s last piece on stage.
Thus it appears as final insight in his life. And this is humbleness - no magic, no Ariel and Caliban, his servants, but a call for forgiveness. Maybe Shakespeare knew the old greek ANTIGONE.
In ANTIGONE`S last paragraph we read:
CHORUS
The most important part of true success
is wisdom—not to act impiously
towards the gods, for boasts of arrogant men [1350]
bring on great blows of punishment—
so in old age men can discover wisdom.
I know, literature and poetry will not simply save the world from the evil.
But many pieces encourage us to live on, they reveal old patterns of might, fuck and brimstone and call us to be human and at least - humble.
From there it is a strong medicine in our sick times...
The Tempest is worth having a look in.
