What are the general signs of a break through in meditation? I ask this because I've been doing it off and on for several years now and only recently have I started back up again. I use a collection of guided meditation and some binaural beats and have recently became a bit..well frustrated I guess. I don't know if I have certain expectations or not.
During a meditation a couple of months ago I was deep into it, feeling relax and just drifting is the word that I'm looking for here. When all of a sudden, through the headphones and the loud volume, I hear a 'STOP' loud and clear. Note that I was by myself and the room was completely dark.
I'm rambling again. Point close, how would I know if I had a break through? Would the signs be more on the emotional side?

I have hit several break tbroughs if you will. Some examples listed:
Higher state of awareness of my skeletal, muscelar, cardiovascular, and nervous systems.
My elaborate explanation. With contoled breathing and focus I can harmonize the energy and blood flow of my body at the same time.
Higher power levels. With constant practice I can stay in mediation for days and focus keeping my power level up as long as I want.
I'm not certain but my focus is far superior to most. Which opens the door for my abilities to work on. Sensing energy from others. Absorbing energy from the sun and the earth. Plants and animals. Trust me you will know when you can hit these marks.
for me a break through would be a consistant meditation practice with no breaks.......going to sit day in and day out in practice would be a breakthrough.....I agree with Ara you would know.....breakthroughs don't have to be huge or grandious they can be small and simple as like a door opening within as to an ah'ha moment.....The other day I was meditating and trying really hard, but then I remembered that it was practice.....practice and that helped so much and so a breakthrough.....breakthroughs come in all "shapes and sizes" the important thing is consistancy.....the book "The direct path by andrew harvey" has some great stuff on meditation it is very helpful!!
Keep up the good "work" :)
you would know the same way when you 'feeling hungry' or 'feeling pain' and etc ... you will just know. The thing is about been individual is - even if we all practice the same technique - the 'result' would be different in each unique way. To tell you exactly the sign of 'break through' would be the same thing as inflicting ... which brings some expectations ( which you would wait to see or feel as for example i have experience) and it would create limitations in your own way. To learn how to listen to yourself is not easy but it's rewarding - even if you make a mistake, at least it's yours.
