Strong Women

A little background is in order regarding this poem I think.There was a woman in our community who was telling all her co-workers of horrendous occurrences in her marriage that had been going on since she was 17. She had two teen-age daughters who confirmed what she told us. Her co-workers stood up en masse and did an intervention that took her to a shelter in a nearby city. Unfortunately she chose to return and probably came close to beating the van back home. The women involved were heartsick and also very fearful of retaliation from the woman’s husband. I wrote this poem and published it in our local paper to show them that what they did was right and done for all the right reasons – even if they felt it had been a failure. It is by no means the best piece of poetry I have ever written from an aesthetic point of view - but it got the point across - and the gentleman in question got the message...we think????Strong women stand and speak their piece.They are sure of what they seeAnd know that thingsAre different far from what they seem.Weaklings soon will seeThat some of us are meant to beHere to speak.We make it hard for them to sayI didn’t know or yes I’d standAgainst the wrongs of other men.The days are gone of womenWho stand by and watch childrenSuffer the wrongs of the parentsWho do not stop and say its wrongFor you to watch.Childish innocence was lostAt an early age,Drowned in the infant tears they shedAs their parent stood defiledBy the partner they choseAnd the life they live.Man or womanIt doesn’t matter.We made a choiceWhen we brought our children forthTo teach them right from wrong.If all they see are the wrongs we heapOn the partner we were meant to treasure,How can we thinkThat they will grow straight and tall?Strong women will no longer stand by and watchAfraid to speak,For the children they see in pain and fear,And danger of losing sight of the values that should be as clearAs they were in stories of yesteryear.Men fought and died to keep us safe.To stand up against the inhumanityOf man against man.Most never thought the time would comeWhere children and mothers would have to fightAnother kind of inhumanity.Strong women stand and speak for all humanity.We know no fear so you must hearThe words we speak loud and clear.
