Teaching myself to play the guitar! =)

Hello folks! =)

I brought myself a guitar for my birthday in July and I'm so excited at the prospect of learning to play it properly!

Anybody have any usefull tips/pointers/advice?

I have been on the internet and have a couple of good beginners books, and can now play the chords A and E. (my fingers on my left hand ache and sting on the tips, and the pain is the only thing stopping me from learning quicker! Lol)

What musical instruments do any of you guys play, or want to learn to play???

(= Peace, love and light folks =)

  • <3 MGem80, music is so awesome...it just seems to expand in such a real way that we can actually feel...I love to play on anything...music is just so.....it can take you beyond.  What a great present to yourself!  I know what you mean about the pain...I hear it is all about the calluses you build up over t i m e....whatever that is...even though it seems to happen all the....time.  LOL
    • Thanks Casandra! =)

I am in my element even learning, so I can just picture how much joy I will feel to play a full song! =)

  • Hey, Gem, congrats! :) www.chordfind.com is a useful site for picking things up. I've played bass for a while, but I'm currently teaching myself guitar as well. The pain is annoying at first, but the more you practise the easier it gets :) x
    • Hello! =)

My friend has my guitar at present, to lower the action and re-string it for me. I'm missing it already!

Thank you for the web reference, it shall be in my favourites shortly! =)

  • I had always wanted to learn how to play the guitar but somehow could not get a suitable person to teach me at that time.It gives me great joy when I see or hear about people attending classes for learning to play musical instruments or classical singing.Music uplifts the Soul.Let it All Be Music......May you succeed and learn to play well.I had tears in my eyes when I read about your attempts and you finally finding a person to guide you.Do upload your compositions in youtube for us to see once you are ready and strumming the guitar like a professional.Much Love and Blessings Dear Heart♥ ♥ ★☆♪♫•♥••.♫♪♫••♥••.♫♪♫•-♥♥*¨*.¸¸.*

      What are barr chords?

  • Hello,    I have had guitars around for years.  For your sore fingers:  It'll go away with time and practice, but a lot of new guitars come with rather high actions and should be adjusted so the strings aren't so hard to hold down.  You may find that you prefer a guitar with nylon strings, y'know a classical sort.  Or an electric (Iprefer Fendder telecasters, especially the holowbody 1969 ,available in re-issue) and the set of strings with .09  size e-string.

But, if you want to consider it, playing a viola, violin, or cello (especially cello!) is where it at!  I play viola and I must say that it is extremely satisfying musically in a way that a guitar could never be.  Compared to playing a viola, violin, or cello, playing the guitar is like driving a bus where the viol is like a sports car or fine bicycle.   I'll never stop playing guitars, but I am very glad that the universe has viols to play and rather synchronistically brought them into my life.  http://stores.ebay.com/yitamusic-violins       http://stores.ebay.com/melody-with-violin?_rdc=1     good deals on these links      have fun      harmony has something to teach us all

  • now all you need is "D" and you are pretty much ready to rock, eh?

might as well learn A minor too. it's easy. same goes for D7.

the B chord is not easy at first, but it will prove worth the effort to learn it.

after that, i'd work on "G" and "C".. this will give you the ability to play many songs

try to be able to change from one chord to another without looking at yer fingers

ive been playing for a few years now, and i can tell you, you are in for hours of fun.

    words from my teachers:

    1. try to play mostly in the middle of the neck

(this sounds hard, but you get the idea after a while like about 10 years)

    2. the notes you DONT play are as important as the ones you do play

    3. practice practice practice

have fun learning chords and such. you can learn a LOT from watching videos on the yootoob thingy

    oh yeah...the fingers.....well

that goes away after a while. just endure it patiently

drop a line any time. i am emildoofus@aol.com

    peace

  • Good for you Gem!

With A & E you can play a few tunes - try searching the net for 'free beginner guitar lessons online"  - you should get heaps of free lessons come up.  You Tube is a good place to look too.

I had always wanted to learn the piano - for one reason or other I have quite a bit of time on my hands at the moment so I decided there is no time like the present and I started learning - via the internet as more time means less money, but I do have a wireless internet connection ;-) Once you learn chords the world is your oyster so to speak,  I love, love, love, love it.
