Rebecca Black - Friday

Observers have called it "bizarre," "inept," and "hilariously dreadful."     The song and singer were "savaged" on social networks across the Internet, while being seen as a "YouTube laughing stock." It has over 77 million views.

Simon Cowell praised Black and said, "I love her [and] the fact that she's gotten so much publicity. People are so upset about the song, but I think it's hysterical. [...] Anyone who can create this much controversy within a week, I want to meet. I love people like that." He observed that "any song to do with the weekend annoys you. It reminds me of 'Saturday Night'... It's what we call a 'hair-dryer song,' a song girls sing into their hair dryers as they're getting ready to go out. But the fact that it's making people so angry is brilliant." Cowell advised Black not to "listen to anyone over the age of 18. I'm being deadly serious. Whatever she's done has worked. Whether you like her or not, she's the most talked-about artist in America right now. Nobody over the age of 18 should understand her or like her. So she should just do it her way."

This immediately lowers our expectations of music.

What does Rebecca Black's "Friday" say about the state of music? That it can be very catchy and even hypnotic.

  • All I have to say to this one is...

    PARTY PARTY PARTY YEAAAAAH!!!!!

    • You could mean:
      "Partying partying YEAH!!!
      Partying partying YEAH!!!"

      and then:
      "Fun fun fun fun"
  • I suggest this group: Blackmores Night.. The group have many songs on youTube

In my opinion This group are the opposite of pop culture..

  • oh lord i saw the video, after watching it it  wouldnt leave my head and i really wanted it out it was so annoying and the lyrics were terrible, it sucks that this is what musics about today. At first  honestly thought it was a joke but when i found out that it was actually a seriouse song my mouth dropped I just kept thinking "WTF?"

    • lol. That was the reaction I wanted. It's infectiously catchy and magically appealing in my opinion.
  • Quit trying to "demonify" music that artists are creating!!!!!

If you don't like what they are making then create your OWN music that has the oppositie energy that you are saying this music has.

Or just do something totally different, but quit attacking artists for what they want to create.

You don't understand why they do the things they do, and you shouldn't be passing that much judgement.
    • I have the same opinion as Simon Cowell. I'm not trying to demonify her. A song as rubbish as that, but sticks in your head has got to be something special.
    • i agree, i hate the song to be honest, but i wouldnt say its a song meant to hypnotize anyone, i think more like annoy, still its gotten 47 million views on you tube so people must like it, im not one of those people
