Below are photos from the 1942 event, witnessed by many. MANY anti-aircraft guns reportedly fired at the object, and not one shot hit the object.
It was believed at the time among many L.A. residents that the object was some sort of advanced aircraft or "Japanese secret weapon," as the Pearl Harbor attack had recently taken place. The CBS radio broadcast (provided) does a great job explaining the mood and the atmosphere.

For the CGI cynics, here's an actual attempt to debunk this event. Click http://mysteriousuniverse.org/2013/03/rethinking-the-great-los-angeles-air-raid-of-1942/ for an explanation of the event with "weather balloons."

The 1942 L.A. UFO "Battle" may be one of the most important UFO events in history, since the craft was witnessed by many people and the U.S. military tried dearly to shoot the craft down and couldn't. Oh, those lovely days of freedom were so special, until the 1947 National Security Act was signed by Harry Truman.
