THE ORGANIC EFFECT: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU SWITCH TO ORGANIC FOOD
When we shared this video called “The Organic Effect” in May of 2015, it created an impact. At the time, it had been viewed just 2,000 times. We shared it. You shared it, and people kept sharing it.
Since then, it has had over 30 million views.
This week, a study out of Harvard demonstrates the importance of this message again.
In a 2012 paper published by the National Institutes of Health, Dr. David Bellinger , a professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School, compared intelligence quotients among children whose mothers had been exposed to these neurotoxins while pregnant to those who had not. Bellinger calculates a total loss of 16.9 million IQ points due to exposure to organophosphates, the most common pesticides used in agriculture.
That study, like this short video, is a game-changer.

The test, and the film, was funded by Coop (coop.se), a supermarket chain in Sweden.Coop has been a pioneer for organic food in Sweden since the 1980’s, but their competitors were catching up and Coop wanted to reestablish their leadership.
We learned that several scientific studies had shown that people who eat conventional food have a number of different pesticides in their bodies, and that if you switch to eating organic food the pesticides pretty much disappear within days.
And since not many people knew about this, we suggested that Coop fund their own test – and film it – so we could present the results in a more accessible format than a scientific report.
So Coop asked IVL, the Swedish Environmental Research Institute (ivl.se) to perform the tests. IVL couldn’t guarantee that we would get the same results as the bigger studies, since it was only one family. But Coop was brave enough to go through with it anyway.
Then IVL had to choose what to look for. There are thousands of different chemicals in circulation, and you only find what you look for. Eventually, IVL chose twelve pesticides.
So this was a really scary project when we were in the middle of it!
We didn’t know if the family would stick to the program, since we couldn’t monitor their every move. And IVL wouldn’t guarantee we’d see the results we were expecting…
But luckily the mother in the family was really committed, and the results proved to be in line with the bigger studies that had been done. Which was a big relief, since the tests were really expensive.

Instead of using taxpayer resources to finance a food system that has been genetically engineered to withstand increasing doses of herbicides, insecticides and pesticides, let’s refinance and structure a food system that makes organic food affordable to all who want it.
