A sense of inner freedom is one of the characteristics of spiritual awakening. This freedom has nothing to do with one's circumstances, location, financial situation or any other external situation. It is an inner feeling, accompanied by a calm mind. Actually, one of the requirements for true spiritual awakening and for a sense of inner freedom is the ability to silence the mind at will.
The mind is never still. It always thinks, analyzes, comments, and conducts inner talks. It thinks according to past programming and education, and therefore, moves in a predetermined path. There is no freedom in this situation.
Freedom starts when you can rise above the mind's activities, and this can happen when you can quiet the mind.
To some extent, this situation happens during deep sleep, but the aim should be to experience this state when fully awake, while talking, eating, working, walking, and in every other situation.
In a state of inner freedom, problems and difficulties do not disappear like magic. They might be there, but it is your attitude toward them that is important. If you don't feel free, you would feel that problems, difficulties, and day-to-day events are difficult and burdensome, but with when you possess a sense of inner freedom, though the problems might be there, you don't feel attached to them, and therefore, despite their presence, you feel free. We don't consider them as problems or a load you have to carry with you. This makes the problems unimportant, and easier to deal with.
Someone, who has attained this sense of inner freedom, does not think or analyze this state. It becomes a natural state, just like breathing. You live it, and live in it. It is as if nothing ties you to anything. You are free from past programming, from what people think about you, and from any limiting thoughts and ideas.
With the sense of inner freedom, you are no longer tied to any manner of thinking, tradition, religion or nationality. Your mind is free to think, or to stay quiet, but with full awareness.
There is a deep sense of being alive and aware that goes together with the sense of inner freedom. There is also a sense of inner peace. The mind is not compelled to think all the time and to run from one thought to another.
This state is synonymous with inner peace, happiness and spiritual awakening.
