Thus, from the very beginning of human history, the existence of evil is shown to result from choices that aim to gratify the self, which has nothing to do with darkness or light; no person is evil, and that only acts may be properly considered evil. Psychologist and mediator Marshall Rosenberg states that the root of violence is the very concept of evil or badness. When we label someone as bad or evil, Rosenberg claims, it invokes the desire to punish or inflict pain. It also makes it easy for us to turn off our feelings towards the person we are harming. He cites the use of language in Nazi Germany as being a key to how the German people were able to do things to other human beings that they normally would not do. He links the concept of evil to our judicial system, which seeks to create justice via punishment — punitive justice — punishing acts that are seen as bad or wrong. He contrasts this approach with what he found in cultures where the idea of evil was non-existent. In such cultures when someone harms another person, they are believed to be out of harmony with themselves and their community, are seen as sick or ill and measures are taken to restore them to a sense of harmonious relations with themselves and others.

Scientific view of Darkness/Black vs. Light/White
We determine the color by the primary type of light the object reflects. We also perceive other properties of colors, and that is lightness or darkness. A light colored object may reflect one color especially well, but also reflect other colors as well. A very light green object, for example, reflects green very well, but also reflects most other colors, just not as well. Our eyes react to different shades of light, and what we determine as colors are different wavelengths of light. When we say an object is a certain color, it is because it is reflecting more of a certain wavelength light.

Black absorbs all the visible radiation that falls on it. That light is then converted into infrared radiation, which is essentially heat. The color of an object depends on the wavelengths of colors reflected from the object. A red apple is red because red wavelengths in white light are reflected and other wavelengths are absorbed; red objects reflect "red" light, or light with a longer wavelength (lower frequency) better than other types of light. In fact, if a red apple were to be illuminated by light that had no red wavelengths, the apple would appear almost black.

When a black object absorbs light, the energy carried by the light doesn't just disappear. Rather, it raises the energy of the object doing the absorbing. The object, in turn, releases the absorbed energy by emitting longer wavelength, lower energy infrared -heat. This transformation of light into heat is the key to understanding the process because it accounts for the law of conservation of energy. Light just doesn't disappear when it strikes a black object -- it's transformed into another kind of radiation that is either radiated from or retained within the black object. The darker the object, the better its emission of heat because it is a better absorber of light.

White light contains light of all frequencies. In that sense, white is a combination of all colors. Black objects absorb light of all frequencies.

A black hole, for example, is an object that emits no radiation whatsoever. But on the other hand, a black body is one, which emits and absorbs radiation of all frequencies equally well. The Sun, for example, is a black body. A rather white and glowing black body, it turns out.

Light travels in waves and is made up of all of the colors of the spectrum. You can see this when light is bent through the use of a prism. When light hits an object three things can happen: it can be absorbed, it can be reflected or it can be transmitted (or shine right through).

Light cannot be absorbed without limit. According to the principle of the conservation of Energy, energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be converted from one type to another. Consequently, most objects that absorb visible light reemit it as heat, although an object may appear dark; it is likely bright at a frequency that humans cannot perceive. White objects, tend to reflect all types of light equally well and none of it is absorbed, and tend to reflect most of the light cast on it. Black objects also, tend to reflect all types of light equally, they just don’t reflect much of the light cast on them. It isn't really the absence of color, its the absence of any reflected light. So it is still made up of all of the colors of the spectrum.

From Artistic point of view, Artists use darkness to emphasize and contrast with light. Darkness can be used as a counterpoint to areas of lightness to create leading lines and voids. Such shapes draw the eye around areas of the painting. Shadows add depth and perspective to a painting. Color paints are mixed together to create darkness, because each color absorbs certain frequencies of light. A black pigment results from a combination of several pigments that collectively absorb most colors. If appropriate proportions of three primary pigments are mixed, the result reflects so little light as to be called "black." In reality, what appears to be black however does reflect some light. In physics, a black body is a perfect absorber of visible light.

If you are talking to someone who deals with generating colors on a computer screen, black and white are exactly the same color, one is just brighter than the other. In computer graphics, they use combinations of just three lights to produce the colors on a screen, red, green, and blue. One of those is hue, saturation, and lightness. This system is more accurate in describing how we perceive colors. The hue is what call color--red, brown, white, etc. The saturation is how much of the other colors is present, and the lightness is how bright the color is. The interesting thing is, white and black have the same hue and saturation; the lightness is all that is different.

    • it is ... just because we do not see doesn't mean it is not there ... ;)) life is made up of opposites, it is like the river with two shores, with free will anybody can change the mind and swim to any side any time ;)) - maybe just our of curiosity or to learn something valuable. However it's not 'wrong' or 'right'.

  • Dark and light are primodial opposites. They are also EXACT opposites. Opposites exist in the natural and human world. For everything, there is always a polar opposite. Opposites are necessary, if not integral, components of life.

Dark and light were always oppositional. Darkness always had negative, even evil connotations. Darkness was and is perceived as suspect.Lightness has always positive, even beatific connotations. Light is seen as honest, welcoming, even good.

Darkness and lightness are the most primordial opposites. In fact, they are basic opposites bar none. Opposites are necessary, if basic, parts of life and/or existence. If there is one thing, there must be its polar opposite. Nothing can exist without an opposites. The context of opposites is an integral part of the natural and human world. Opposites are ways of differentiating things, events, and people. Opposites are also ways to help people appreciate and realize things and life in its full contextual perspective. Opposites teach people that are varying aspects to things, events, and people. In essence, opposites give people a much broader perspective in life.

    • agree, those opposites are from the same source ... "one compliment the other" ...

This is kind of 'funny' but there is a point and irony at the same time ... ;)

  • Most people don't want to be who they are, they want to be somebody else. To open that door to "who you are" ... is a very 'scary' thing, only a few are brave enough to do it, cause once that door is open, there is no turning back from it, perhaps subconsciously people do feel it ... and they simply just don't want it. - RESPONSIBILITY- nor GROW UP ... ;))

Thanks Mikeil ;)) you are right: "A healthy balance but understanding of either side or view is recommended. We cannot deny what we know or see, but we can balance it out and keep either stable. Leading to less trickery from the illusions, smoke and mirrors".

  • Thankyou Ara,

An interesting topic and I'd like to suggest that human languages are limited in scope, albeit what we are compelled to use, as we evolve through life experiences, within a more limited consciousness than that of the Spiritual Hierarchy, we are aiming to merge with....

Those Masters on the path of earth service, are well aware of the limitations of languages, such as English, to convey deeper meanings...However, from what I have learned, the terms; "evil" and "black," or "dark," are used often in their teachings, to enable some semblance of comprehension by chelas....As we see in the extensive works of Master DK, for example...

And in the Great Invocation itself, the term "evil" is used in the last stanza....This does not demand punishment, but a service to transform and a closing of the door upon it...

Moreover, there is a contrasting "Black Lodge" which defends the forces of materiality, against the evolutionary mission of those who serve the divine plan within the Great White Brotherhood, or the White Lodge....
Darkness is indeed simply an absence of LIGHT.....Yet, the terms used have value for seekers of the Ageless Wisdom, to learn from....such words as simple tools, which, by and large, assist comprehension....and invoke transformation...

    Love and Light, dear sister.....Drekx

    • ... ;))

2,000 years ago this approach was necessarily to teach people to understand the difference in the choices they make, however since then the human conscious has expanded substantially, and the language is the only source for us to communicate and comprehend the meaning regardless how limited it is - Word have a specific meaning.
Dark is not an absence of light, it’s absorb the light and radiates the heat (which is different type of light) ... is understood to be an absence of visible light. Light doesn’t absorb the light it simply reflect it back it makes it cold … in some way i see the irony in that ... ;))  we live in the kingdom of Universal Father – God loves the sinner and hates the sin (evil) – He is a transcendent personality, and persons can only love and hate other persons. Sin is not a person. God loves the sinner because he is a personality reality (potentially eternal) while towards sin He strikes no personal attitude, for the sin is not a spiritual reality. So why do we use and create our reality based on something that will never bring balance or spiritual happiness. Happiness ensues from the recognition of truth because it can be acted out, it can be lived. Disappointment and sorrow attend upon error because, not being a reality it can’t be realize in experience. Life is not black and white ;))

      Thank you Drekx ;)

  • ... ;)) good points

    • i like that evil is restricted by its own actions and good is free to be......

  • Converge
    • ... ;))
