What-do-you-see-in-the-mirror--300x240Have you ever noticed how the wind animates itself through the rustling leaves? We can’t see the air. We only know of it’s presence by the way it dances with the trees as wind. Air inspires the wind – yet it is NOT the wind – it is simply the outward reflection of it. I find this a powerful metaphor to describe the consciousness of the soul…
Consciousness has an intangible presence. It can first be seen by it’s outward effect, as it expresses itself through the soul. If consciousness is like the air, then the soul would be the wind.
Everything we see is a reflection
Our soul animates the world around us, in the same way a willow tree quivers when the wind blows. EVERYTHING we see outside is an animation created by our internal state of consciousness. What we see and feel, is like a gigantic cosmic mirror, reflecting back this exact state of consciousness.
The purpose is so that we can self realise, or ‘see ourselves’. Once we realise that everything outside of us is just a reflection of our internal state of being, it opens up a whole new world of insight. This insight, can show us exactly where our constrictions and blockages are.
If we are willing to look at these with openness, then our possibilities of spiritual and evolutionary growth sky rocket. By seeing that the outer world is a reflection, we can embrace what it means to be a fully soul-embodied human, whilst releasing the blockages that unleash our full evolutionary potential.
The view from the mountain
The reflection we see unfolds through many levels, depending on which altitude of the spiritual path we are looking from. It’s somewhat like climbing a mountain. There are times when you look at the detail, the rocks, the flowers, the dew on the grass along the journey; but the higher you climb, the more of an expansive view you are also able to see.
It’s a continual process of walking the spiritual path. First we discover basic tenets of humanness, such as physicality and emotionality. Further along the road, we begin to unveil our spiritual nature and then realising that we are even beyond that. Eventually we embody and live it fully.
We all have our own mirror
Have you ever wondered why twenty people could be in exactly the same situation, yet each tell a completely different story? This is because for each one, there is something unique to be experienced. It doesn’t mean that one person is right and another is wrong either.
Each person is right in the sense that the external mirror is reflecting back to them EXACTLY what they need to see. If we are open and honest with ourselves, we can interpret what we see. Again, what we can actually see, depends on how far we have climbed on the spiritual path, how high the vantage point is on the spiritual mountain.
We can always see what we need to see, enough to shed a layer or two; This unraveling keeps us traveling on the path. Each layer that we shed allows us to rise to a higher altitude.
When we look in the mirror of the outer world, our vision is filtered by the layers we’ve built up; the layers we need to shed. But remember that the filter that we see through is our greatest treasure – it contains the gifts to truly set us free.
“A small boy looked at a star and began to weep. The star said, ‘Boy, why are you weeping?’ And the boy said, ‘You are so far away I will never be able to touch you.’ …The star answered, ‘Boy, if I were not already in your heart, you would not be able to see me.’”
Waking up
It can be difficult to believe that EVERYTHING is a reflection. It is challenging to comprehend this with the ‘belief laden mind’ that ‘imprisoned’ our consciousness in the first place! That’s why the external mirror doesn’t really mean anything until we have woken up (Gateway 1).
When we wake up, we begin attuning to Unity Consciousness. We see the consequence of our actions and stop blaming the outside world for everything that we don’t like. We look within and realise that our perception of the outside world changes as a direct consequence of how we are being inside.
When we awaken to Unity Consciousness, we experience the interconnectedness of all things and see that ‘all I see is part of me’ or as John Magliola so aptly put it…
“When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.”

So when the outer mirror shows me something – I watch very closely. It contains the seeds of my spiritual growth; my evolution.
What do you see in the mirror?
