The term indigo children originates from the 1986 book Understanding Your Life Through Colour by Nancy Ann Tappe, who stated she was a synesthete and could see "auras" around people. She wrote that during the mid 1960s she began noticing that many children were being born with indigo life colours. She then went on to explain how these "life colours" or "Auras" show that Indigo Children are getting more in number.
The idea of indigo children was later popularized by the 1998 book The Indigo Children by the husband-and-wife team of Lee Caroll and Jan Tober.
At this point we would like to mention that recently Nancy Ann Tappe has retracted her claims, and along with Lee Caroll and Jan Tober she has backed away from the Indigo movement.
Followers of the Indigo belief system believe that Indigo children have psychic ability and are more highly evolved than other children. There is a call from many to have special schools for "Indigo Children" to make sure they are educated amongst their own and outside an education system that in their opinion does not allow from the Indigo Child's specail abilities and needs. They also suggest that if a special school is not possible these children should be taught at home. It is also suggested by many believers that they should not associate with non-indigo children
In addition this movement suggests that children who have been diagnosed with ADHD, ADD and Autism have actually been misdiagnosed. They state that they are actually Indigo Children who have been given these "labels" simply due to a lack of understanding by professionals. They encourage parents of such children to fight against this by turning down medication for their children, or any therapies suggested, or any special education. Basically they suggest that there is no such thing as ADHD/ADD/Autism and parents should simply let their "Indigo" child develop in their own way.
The movement also dismisses Mental Health problems. As well as children, adults are targeted on this issue. We have Indigo Children, Crystal Adults, Star Children. but basically it all revolves around the same idea of people born with an "Indigo" aura around them. Both with children and adults the movement suggests that people with many mental health issues (especially Bi-Polar) are actually Indigo and should not enter into any form of treatment be it medication or any other therapy.

I've long been horrified by the administration of drugs to the children diagnosed with ADD and ADHD, who, to me, were just very active, very exhuberant, lively children. I've always felt that the problem stemmed from the parents just not wanting to be "bothered" by the activity of the children. I feel sure that had ADD and ADHD been known about when I was a child I would have been diagnosed as having one or the other, because, I was a very active, very exhuberant child. We need to just allow children more self-expression, however, each individual child MAY express him/herself.
Thank you for posting this, Alexander.
Thank you for starting this discussion Alexander. Outstanding!

I have been to several healers and they all say I have an indigo aura. I can remember since I was a small child, how I would not really react to anything - I would just sit and watch and try to understand. When my mom lost her dad, I was 6, and I remember looking up at her wondering why she was so sad - he was free, I thought! I'm still like that today. I just dont understand the misery of the world. I cannot feel true sorrow, which is sad. To me, this all feels like an illusion and I know what is real and what will always last - love and light. So it's quite boring at times, going through life lessons while knowing how they will end. I hope there is something else for me still to learn. I want to be of big help on the planet, thats my main goal. Nothing moves me like tears of joy and thankfullness.

My husband is a "special needs" school bus driver and has told me some tales about some very disturbed children who ride his bus, and I've diagnosed them as children crying out for Love, attention and most of all understanding. So, I've been exposed to this you might say secondhand, but, I can "feel" what these children are feeling.
