Why do we have to sit on Santa's lap....lol...
Hmmm, I just had to google search 'christmass stockings'. 'Santa culture' is wee bit strange here.
Maybe we could say; "where is the bear...??" Do you want a teddy in your Christmas stocking, Rama...?? ;-)
I guess it is cause I complained lots abount rampant misuse of well defined words in ACC. Then you miss my point. My complain is more of about the consistant refusal to define words when called upon by the other person getting confused. Otherwise words are VERSATILE. There is no rule pertaining to uses of words as long as we communicate.
Words are more like hammers, saws, helmets etc than the house we build. The house is the topic, but this does not mean we neglect to spend time with tools, if we are to build a house. Without helmet, we may not leave to be in the house we are building. Our harmers can hit our fellow workers.
COMPREHEND:
1: to grasp the nature, significance or meaning
2: to contain or hold within a total scop, significance or amount
3: to include by construction or implication
I tended to use the second notion.
So if I only discuss TOPIC but not the WORD, how would my reader know which of the 3 notions am I riferring to??
Also, it is not the word per-se but rather the CONCEPT that I like clarifying lots in topics. As a mathematical physicist, I understand the importance of setting language accurately in grasping concepts. If you were to study relativity, you may as well wonder whether it is math that you are taking or phyc. But math is just a language. It is even possible that all we need to do here is just clarify our languages instead of debating topics as most of us speak what is deeply within us and we all may be correct, only that we are not COMMUNICATING!!!
To comprehend is just not to understand. It is to do it EXAUSTIVELY. You can understand general relativity through the picturesque of 'curved space'. However, up until you do Riemannian geometry, you haven't COMPREHENDED it yet.
your claim that I discuss words but not topic is mistaken a bit. I understand that language is limited and not every notion I want to express has a corresponding word already in the dictionary. Therefore I make use of the best word possible or I coin one. It is perfectly alowed in philosophy as long as one gives his unique definition. All what matter is for you to understand me, not the words I use.
Comprehend: To know all the relevant details.
Understanding is dynamic and grows in proportional to knowledge. Our comprehension on the other hand is always limited at any given moment. We donnot understand the cell, but only because we cannot familiarize our selves with all facts about the cell; including the invisible things such as 12 strands of DNA. We say the cell is BEYOND COMPREHENSION. Not beyond UNDERSTANDING. Rather, we say we will never understand it COMPLETELY. It is the same with the universe, the mind, God etc. Everytime we look through the telescope, we understand things that were yet to be understood.
I´ve often wondered where you get your definitions of words....since you often like to discuss the words more than the topics. I looked up comprehend and here is what I got.... several different dictionaries.
To comprehend something is to understand it, like when you have to read a difficult passage more than once in order to comprehend it.
When you comprehend something, you grasp its meaning. Comprehend is a verb that originates from the Latin word comprehendere, which means “catch or seize.” When an idea is clear to you and you understand it completely, you comprehend it..
It simply might be beyond my ability to understand at this moment.
