How Can We Recognize Evil?

- from the book "Soul to Soul" by Gary ZukavWhat is the distinction between recognizing something evil andjudging it?Evil is an absence. It is not a presence. Evil is the absence of Love -uncontaminated conscious Light. The remedy for an absence is apresence, not an action. You cannot imprison, deport, or kill evil. Noteven a great army can defeat evil. It can only defeat another army.Where there is an absence of Love there is fear, judgement, andviolence. If you fear and judge the darkness, you step into thedarkness. Evil is the darkness. You cannot fight evil without joiningit. You cannot judge it without joining it. You can recognize itwithout joining it. The difference between judgement of evil andrecognition of evil is your emotional reaction. If you are repulsed andfrightened, you are judging what you encounter. If you can see anangry, or deceitful, or violent person for what he or she is - a fellowstudent in the Earth school who is in extreme pain - you can interactwith that person appropriately. You do not need to trust her withyour savings. You also do not need to feel superior or righteous. When you have an emotional reaction to what you see, you arejudging. That is your signal that you have an issue inside of yourself-with yourself - not with the other person. If you react self-righteouslyto evil, look inside yourself for the very thing that so agitates you,and you will find it. If it were not there, you would simply discern, act appropriately, and move on. When you have an emotionalreaction to evil, - the absence of Love - that absence is in you.Understanding this is very important because it enables you topersonally contribute to the reduction of evil. You do that bychanging yourself into the loving person that you would like othersto be. Until you do, you will be a part of the evil that so repulses you.The change from an absence of Love in a human life to the presence ofLove in a human life is the creation of authentic power - thealignment of the personality with the soul. Your emotional reactionsto the evil you encounter and your judgements of it show you whatyou need to change in yourself. Changing those parts of yourpersonality that judge, react in fear, and cannot love into acceptance, fearlessness, and love is the journey you were born to make.
