Hy-Brasil: Hy Brazil….. Ui Breasal…..West of Galway Bay in Ireland?.

Irish Uí Breasail (meaning "descendants (i.e., clan) of Breasal"),“Brasil” comes from Portuguese “brasa”, which means “ember” — so, the colour of a burning piece of coal.

The most famous of legendary islands is, of course, Atlantis. The existence of Atlantis is hotly debated, and people continue to search for proof that it was real. However, Even though, Atlantis is far more famous, whether it existed or not, Atlantis researchers commonly point to the Azores as the origin of the Atlantis Legend.

There is another such island, though much lesser-known, called Hy-Brasil, though better documented, and has had more eyewitness accounts; giving this mysterious island, a hint of plausibility.

A proposed location  for Hy-Brasil is an area of the Irish shelf roughly 120 miles west of Ireland known as Porcupine Shoal. The location is currently a flourishing coral reef. However, to date no archaeological evidence has been found that places the reef above seawater, or any signs that civilization had existed there.

Legends of these and many other lost and mysterious islands have circulated since man first took to the seas. Stories of advanced civilizations, magicians, and Eden-like paradises have been told and re-told by sailors. Some of these sailors claim to have seen and even gone to shore on these magical islands.

Why should we not think that there is a core of truth in the ancient myths?  

The Legend of Hy-Brasil

One of the earliest known reference of the island stems from Irish myths. In folklore, this island country takes its name from Breasal, the High King of the World, in Celtic history. Age-old Irish legends of sea-faring expeditions striking land in the Atlantic, Hy-Brasil’s first recorded appearance on a map dates from around 1325, as Bracile on a portolan map.

In Celtic folklore there are mentions of several other mythicial Lands. The fairy islands off the coast of Pembrokeshire Wales, Lyonesse south west of Cornwall. The Islands Falias, Gorias, Murias and Findias, the homes of the Tuatha De Danaan.?

These lost Islands live in the earliest versions of the Celtic tales and I do wonder, did these islands once exist and have now been lost to earthquakes and other geological events? Or are they a fantasy utopia created to give hope to those living in constantly chaotic societies?

The earliest Irish records say that the Tuatha De Danaan came from Islands to the West and the North.  Supposedly the island Hy-Brasil was roughly 200 miles off of the coast of Ireland in the Atlantic Ocean. It was said to be shrouded in mist, making it invisible to passing sailors. The mist lifts for only one day every seven years.

From there, the legends expound in every direction. In some renditions of the legend, the island is the home of the Gods of Irish lore. In other retellings, Hy-Brasil is inhabited not by gods, but rather by priests or monks. These monks were rumoured to hold a vast and ancient knowledge which allowed them to create an advanced civilization where the inhabitants led a luxurious and near effortless way of life. No matter which version of the ancient Hy-Brasil story is retold, the two main components that remain the same are the rough location and the element that it was a paradise.

More recently, many individuals have associated the Hy-Brasil legend with Ufology. Some UFO researchers contend that the island was not the home of Celtic gods, but instead an alien outpost. Whether islands like Hy-Braesil are one of the ancient island homes of the Tuatha De Danaan and whether the Gods of the Celts and their ‘magic’ items, were aliens, is speculation!

Certainly.. Nuada with his silver arm, does sound like a high-tech cybernetic device?

The Celtic god, Lugh as an example.

Lugh was the Celtic god of war who carried a magic spear capable of creating lightening. UFO researchers believe that Lugh was actually an alien general who possessed a laser or some other type of “death ray.” They cite several ancient ruins that appeared to have been subject to large concentrated amount of heat. The heat, supposedly, was enough to turn the stone into glass.

Some people are of the opinion and state that the island is actually in fact a vehicle that transports our true ancestors through portals under the ocean. And that these appearances sometimes cause cataclysmic events eg tidal waves and earth quakes. The mist that shrouds the "island" is created by the heat from the vehicle in the ocean. And they firmly believe it is not the only location where this occurs. It also happens in other parts of the world.

Furthermore, claims have been made that aliens have contacted individuals and gave them the coordinates to Hy-Brasil in the form of binary code.

Facts about Hy-Brasil

Actual facts about the mysterious island are far and few in between.

The earliest known reference of Hy-Brasil on any map is 1325. When it was shown on the map, its location was usually to the west or southwest of Ireland. From then on, some maps included the island, while others chose not to include it. As attempts to find the island failed, map-makers started to leave it off most nautical charts. By 1865, it was rarely found on any map at all.

The phantom island’s last documented appearance took place in 1872, seven years after its removal from official nautical charts. The traveller and author T.J. Westropp, having already seen the island twice before, had brought a shipload of witnesses (including his mother) to verify his sighting of Hy-Brasil. The party did indeed see the island appear - and then disappear, never to be seen again.

A fitting end for a phantom island.

But thereafter, Hy-Brasil reverted to its elusive self. Hy-Brasil has also been cited by some to be located in the Azores, and shown as either one or two separate islands. Though the two locations mostly associated with Hy-Brasil are the Azores and Porcupine Bank.

In 1497, Spanish diplomat Pedro de Ayala reports home that John Cabot, the first European to visit North America since the Vikings in the 11th century, had made his journey with “the men from Bristol who found Brasil.” Ayala also mentioned in that letter a famous lagoon In Azores, in the island São Miguel called Lagoa das Siete Ciudades (Lagoon of the Seven Cities), which is divided in the Blue and Green lagoons; their naming was probably inspired by the legend. A mysterious collection of seven cities supposedly founded in the 8th century on one or more islands in the Atlantic by Christians fleeing the Muslim conquista of Iberia.

There is some controversy over whether or not the country of Brazil owes its name to the phantom island of Hy-Brasil. Main argument in favour is the well-documented practise of transplanting other fictional names to real places in the Americas, such as Antillia (another phantom island, which became the Antilles). Argument against: Brazil was first called Terra de Santa Cruz (‘Land of the Holy Cross’), and renamed Brazil only after a few decades, when its coastal hardwood came to be exploited on a large scale. This was called pau-brasil in Portuguese, possibly derived from an old root word for ‘red’ or ember. 

So was/is Hy-Brasil a pure legend without basis in fact? We’ll never know for certain. But maybe - just maybe - the legend of an island west of Ireland is a folk memory from the end of the last Ice Age, some 20000 years ago (approx) when the sea levels were 400 feet or so lower, could it be that Hy-Brasil was visible to be discovered and only periodically seen exposed above water. Did (12th to 18th centuries) seaman encounter the island occasionally due to tides, sea level changes, etc… and now it no longer surfaces because of its slide into the depths –

It fits with an alternate name for Hy-Brasil: Tir fo-Thuin, the ‘Land Below the Wave’.

Hypothesis:

The poles have been warming/changing for centuries increasing the levels of the oceans. This could well account for the disappearance of Hy-Brasil and Atlantis. Warming and cooling cycles, that we know of over the centuries, do have an effect on ocean levels. Consider the possible effects of polar shifts on the above. We might also add in continental drift, the movement of the tectonic plates. As the fault line in the Atlantic swallows the sea bed – the land positions slowly change.

The convergence of the tectonic plates that is making the Atlantic Trench, as the plates go back down into the Earth’s molten core, the land masses will sink and slowly move into the trench. I guess, possibly that in millennia to come, perhaps we could see the whole of the UK sinking below the waves!

Plato did described the disappearance of Atlantis as a catastrophic event long before his time… saying a circular island with central waterways and an advanced civilization was destroyed which existed beyond the pillars of Hercules… regarding potential catastrophic events in the Eastern Atlantic, we have had evidence and programmes describing the potential of huge tsunami possibilities on some of the islands in the East Atlantic – let’s speculate that one occurred in say 2-4000BC and the legend of destruction was handed down until Plato captured the legend in his time…

We know that the floor of the Atlantic is moving Westward thus pushing the Hy Brasel site, if it is/was truly in this area it is descending into an abyss.

It would be really interesting to see undersea explorers do some extensive submersible studies of the UFO coordinates along a track that parallels the movement of the Atlantic tectonic plate.

Finally,

I can’t help but to be pulled by the FACTS of history.

Proof on the walls of ancient man and all the myriad of carved statues and ancient texts. Myths, legends, folklore and superstition all may have a basic 'truths'.

Experts/pioneers etc...should forget space exploring and explore the oceans on our beautiful planet. The ancient flooding's has covered so much of the world. And at the bottom of the ocean there is bound to be some undeniable evidence, as well as structured buildings, etc... You can see distinct mountains and gullies under sea. So surely you would be able to see a raised mound of earth for this island and other structures.

–Lastly, I do vaguely remember seeing a year or so ago a piece of news published on the BBC website about an oceanographically survey that was being undertaken to the West of Ireland’s shores and they had found a section of the sea-bed raised, like a plateau and the surface of this raised section had the appearance of a large island, complete with mountain’s, river-beds and so on!

But I can’t find any other information, as yet.  Maybe the fabled island has been found maybe not?

This island is supposed to re-appear sometime in 2013, but I don’t know any specific day.

I guess we may never really know the full truth but it does give food for thought!!
