Let Go of Attachment and Get Back on Your Life Path

“Being attached is what prevents us from seeing, it is what clouds this miraculous awareness.” ~ Geoffrey Shugen Arnold

When you spend most of your days running around like a crazy person, doing one thing after another, constantly thinking about the many things you have to do. Regretting the past, worrying and stressing and trying to make everyone around you happy, it can be quite challenging to think about the meaning of life and the reason of your existence. It can be quite challenging to find some time to meditate, to contemplate and to think whether the life you are now living and the path you are now walking is the path that you are meant to be walking.

The way I see it, we live in a crazy world. A world where everything seems important, urgent and where everyone else’s needs seem to be more important than our own needs. A world where the relationships we have with our jobs, with our material possessions and with the many people in our lives seem to be more important than the relationship we have with our own Self.

But what if the relationship you have with your own Self and with your own Soul is more important than any other relationship you have? What if the path you are meant to be walking and the things you are meant to be doing in this lifetime are more important than your attachment to all of the people in your life, to all of the things you posses and to all of the things you do?

Think about it… And I mean, really think about it…

Way too many people act as if everything and everyone is theirs to keep, theirs to posses and to control. When in fact nothing is ours to keep. Not our bodies, not our children, not our possessions and not our lives.

Everything in life is given to us to enjoy, to appreciate and to learn from but never to keep.

We are in this world but not of it.

Our bodies might belong to this physical world but our Souls do not. And if we continue to act as if we will inherit this physical world and if we continue to judge after appearances, we will continue to be enslaved by the evidence of our senses. And we will continue to allow our attachment to all these physical things to keep us from fully connecting with our Soul and from who we are underneath it all.

You are the main character in the story of your life. Just like everyone else is the main character in their own story, of their own life. And if that’s the case, why would you choose to play a different role? Why would you choose to go on a path that is not yours to walk upon, and why would you choose to live a life that is not yours to live?

In the New Testament this idea is portrayed so beautifully: “He that loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and he that loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” ~ Matthew 10:37

In the book The Prophet by Khalil Gibran as well: “Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. They came through you but not from you and though they are with you yet they belong not to you.”

Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself… They came through you but not from you and though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may be a parent, you may be a wife or a husband, a friend, a sister or a brother… and even though it’s natural and wonderful to love those close to you, the important thing is to never cling on to anyone. To never act if you posses those around you. To never act as if you have a right to control other people’s lives. And to never act as if they are the reason of your existence, because they’re not.

Why is it written: “He that loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and he that loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.”? Because the relationship you have with your own Self, with your own Soul and with the Source of all things is the most important relationship in your own life. Just as it should be the most important relationship in everyone else’s lives.

Since not too many people live life this way, it can be quite challenging to use your own mind and heart to think about the many of things. It can be quite challenging to understand that once you make the relationship you have with anyone or anything in this physical world more important than that relationship you have with your own sacred Self, you move away from your Divinity. You forget about yourself and about the reason of your existence and you start to live a life that is not yours to live.

I remember reading these words when I was younger: “Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” ~ Matthew 19:24, and thinking to myself that if you are rich you will not go to Heaven. But I see it differently now.

There’s nothing wrong with having abundance in your life, with loving people and appreciating the beauty that surrounds you. But when you become attached to all of them and when you use them as an excuse as to why you’re not going where your heart wants you to go and why you’re not walking on the path your Soul wants you to be walking, that’s when you move away from your own Divinity. That’s when you stop connecting with your Soul, making the relationship you have with physical things, people and places a lot more valuable and a lot more important than the relationship you have with your own heart, with your own Spirit and with the Source of all things.

We know little or nothing about who we truly are because we get too preoccupied with transitory things of life. And as long as we will continue to live this way, and as long as we will continue to cling on to everything and everyone. Perceiving them all as being more important than who we ourselves are, we will continue to walk in darkness and we will continue to move further and further away from our own Divinity and away from the path we are meant to walk in life.

“All day I think about it, then at night I say it. Where did I come from, and what am I supposed to be doing? I have no idea. My soul is from elsewhere, I’m sure of that, and I intend to end up there.” ~ Rumi

Are there any attachments preventing you from walking on your life path? Do you think that the path you are now walking is the path you are meant to be walking on?

  • Yes, Amen, Nancy!

  • So beautifully said, Amparo and so true. I too am changing...not letting things effect me like they used to. The greatest gift we can give to others is to love ourselves because when we do it's easy to love everyone and everything else. We learn to see clearly now what is important. Love and blessings, beautiful Amparo...

  • It never hurts to take some time away from things, IS and get some perspective. I'm so happy it's helped you.

  • Thanks, your very sweet, I have been... lets say on a quest for awhile. off the grid. My family has been supportive. I AM back now.  (:

I have been gone on a quest to find myself again and to help find answers on many things. And now that I'm back I AM more powerful than ever.  And I have missed you all too, very deeply. I just needed to take care of things..

  • You're very welcome, Infinite Soul...it's so very good to have you back with us...you've been missed.

  • Thank you Avatar for sharing this.    (:
